I got it wrong Gallas is playing out of position on the left (not right) while the second right back, Johnson, or the stand-in one, Huth, have shown vulnerabllity recently.

The Pope, the Barlows and the European Cup winners

A bizarre series of coincidences involving such disparate influences as the Pope and Coronation Street is apparently pointing towards European Cup glory for Liverpool this season.

The Reds have won the European Cup twice before, in 1978 and 1981, and major cultural events in both years have already been repeated in 2005.

Liverpool beat Real Madrid in the 1981 final, the same year Prince Charles got married and Coronation Street viewers were treated to Ken and Deirdre Barlow tying the knot.

Rafael Benitez's side reached the semi-final of the European Cup yesterday, while Prince Charles got married again last weekend, with Ken and Deirdre also re-marrying. To add to the coincidences, Liverpool finished fifth in 1981, and Benitez's side are currently in the same position.

This year also has parallels with 1978, when Liverpool lifted the European Cup after beating Bruges. The Pope died the same year and Wales's rugby team won the grand slam - both of which has also happened in 2005.

Liverpool also lost in the League Cup final to the league champions in 1978, which looks set to be repeated this season after they lost to Chelsea 3-2 at the Millennium Stadium.

Bookmakers have been prompted to pay special attention to these coincidences and Warren Lush, a spokesman for Ladbrokes, said: "Everyone seems to be picking up on what the years have in common. It could well result in a gamble on Liverpool to win the Champions League. Punters like these kind of coincidences, bookmakers don't.

"If you had walked into a betting shop in January 1981 and asked for a bet on Prince Charles getting married, Ken and Deirdre marrying on Coronation Street, a new Dr Who being appointed and Liverpool winning the European Cup the odds were 54/1. If you had done the same in January 2005 the combined odds would have been 2447/1."
