Owen to return - Miss him or not?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Funniest thing ive read for ages
Sam Allardyce has revealed he would be interested in bringing Michael Owen to Bolton in an ambitious swoop.
The Bolton chief has admitted a top striker is his main target in the summer as he looks to bolster his squad.
Allardyce revealed he would be in the running to sign Owen if he became available at Real Madrid.
Owen's future at Real has been the subject of intense speculation for some time with the England international failing to secure a regular starting place in the team since his move from Liverpool.
Allardyce would love to take the former Liverpool hit-man to The Reebok Stadium, but accepts it may be difficult to persuade the player to make the move.
"If Michael Owen was available, he would be first on our list," said Allardyce.
"You wonder whether he would want to come and play for us and there would be an obvious problem with his wages and transfer fee.
"But Michael Owen is an England international and the best goalscorer we will have for a long time to come. It would be an achievement if were even to consider us.
"We already have two former Real Madrid players here in Fernando Hierro and Ivan Campo, so you could never actually write off the fact we might get a third!
"To have any chance at all, we would have to qualify for Europe. After that, who knows?
"Regular first-team football is important for most players. Money becomes secondary when you are sitting on the bench every week or sat in the stand.
"Michael Owen is a matchwinner. If he is not getting that adrenalin rush often enough, he probably wants it back."

I'm sure Owen would be the perfect striker in big Sam's 'lump it up the park' tactics!!  LOL

What a joke Allardyce is

i'd love to hear mikey trying to be diplomatic about that one: 'i'm very happy here but obviously it's very flattering to be linked to the likes of bolton...'

it's not the greatest compliment in the world.  :D

the other day  my mate told me that Owen had been seen talking to Ian Rush , i did not belive him until now , Owen might have felt that he would be seen as a failire if he come back to liverpool after such a short move, if he has spoken to Ian this might have helped hi,m to come out and say this.

I would love him to come back , and it might help stevie stay

The best thing for us in the Owen situation financially, and by any other means is to get him on loan for a year instead of buying him in the summer.

sounds like good business.

if he doesnt show top for after a year then give him back, but if he shows really good for and sharpness, buy him back with 1 less year than he has currently on his real contract. thus cheaper.

Totally agree with this post.

Not the first time I've said it but Owen is an overrated turncoat.  He has lost a yard of pace and is still living on past reputation.  Hasn't been at his best since the treble season IMO.

If he came back it wouldn't be long before people were moaning about why we brought back such an injury prone player who can't head, hold the ball up or bring others into play.

Posts like this from knowledgeless idiots who claim Owen doesn't bring others into play (his main strength along with his finishing) and claiming he's mediocre and he only scores goals because the team is build around blah blah ****** blahdy ****** blah blah.

STOP MAKING PATHETIC EXCUSES.

FACT, OWEN'S GOAL AVERAGE PER SEASON IS OVER 20.

FACT, OWEN HAS ONLY FAILED TO HIT THE 20 MARK WHEN HE'S HAD SERIOUS INJURY OR NOT BEEN IN THE TEAM.

FACT, HE'S ONE OF ENGLANDS TOP GOALSCORERS.

FACT, HE GENERATES REVENUE FOR THE CLUB.

FACT, HE HAS THE BEST GOALS TO MINUTES RATIO IN SPAIN.

FACT, HE'S RIPPED TEAMS TO PIECES ON HIS OWN IN THE PAST.

opinion, HE'LL KEEP DOING THAT.

FACT, HE PERFORMS IN BIG GAMES WHEN THE PRESSURE IS ON, HE PRODUCES SOMETHING SPECIAL.

FACT, LIVERPOOL HAVE MISSED A PLAYER OF HIS QUALITY THIS SEASON.

FACT, LIVERPOOL HAVE MISSED HIS 20-30 GOALS THIS SEASON.

FACT, LIVERPOOL WITHOUT OWEN IS NOWHERE NEAR AS GOOD AS LIVERPOOL WITH.

FACT, HE'S SHEER CLASS.

ANOTHER FACT, ANYONE WHO THINGS HE ISN'T HASN'T GOT A ****** CLUE ABOUT FOOTBALL.

END OF ****** STORY YOU PATHETIC KNOW NOTHING IDIOTS!!!

I think Stu likes an argument. The best way is to post knowledgeless ****** and wait for others to start the debate.

My god, how easy it is to rip your post apart. It is pathetic how some fans end up loving certain players MORE than the real thing which is the CLUB. What I love from football is a strong team unit with pride and passion. Owen showed last year that he does not want to be part of LFC, and now that he has failed to command a starting place under 3 DIFFERENT managers and a NUMBER of caretaker managers he is suddenly a class above all others. Above criticism, a god. It is pathetic isn't it?

FACT, HE HAS THE BEST GOALS TO MINUTES RATIO IN SPAIN
Most goals per minute? Solskjaer has had that for years in Man United. No one would ever claim he was a better player that for instance Nistelroy. Reason some substitutes get good goal ratio is simple. 1) They enter the pitch with fresh legs when others are tired and 2) the game is possibly already over and a goal extra won't change the outcome 3) the game is already won and the other team is pushing forward 4) the team is losing and need to score (lot of effort and balls in the box). The only way to prove yourselvers as a footballer is to win a regular place in the first 11, and score goals. Owen has been given many chances, this has resulted in early substitutions, lost games, and massive criticism.

FACT, OWEN'S GOAL AVERAGE PER SEASON IS OVER 20
Owen's a 20 goals + player you say? Bollox:

03/04 16 goals
02/03 19 goals
01/02 19 goals
00/01 16 goals
99/00 11 goals
98/99 18 goals

His average being 16,5 goals, not hitting above the 20 mark in any season.

FACT, OWEN HAS ONLY FAILED TO HIT THE 20 MARK WHEN HE'S HAD SERIOUS INJURY OR NOT BEEN IN THE TEAM
Then you negate yourselves, saying he has failed to deliver goals. Claiming his injuries has stopped him from scoring. Who cares. Football is a physical sport and injuries is part of football.

FACT, HE'S ONE OF ENGLANDS TOP GOALSCORERS
Who cares. And what is the competition. Shearer has been englands best goalscorer, and he has been unavailable for selection. Other top teams have relied on goals from foreign stars like Henry, Nistelroy etc.

FACT, HE GENERATES REVENUE FOR THE CLUB.
So does any other player, an effective advertising campaign, CL football and a lot more.

FACT, HE'S RIPPED TEAMS TO PIECES ON HIS OWN IN THE PAST
He was a valuable player four years ago, that player is long gone. And you seemed to have notice since you say "in the past"

FACT, LIVERPOOL WITHOUT OWEN IS NOWHERE NEAR AS GOOD AS LIVERPOOL WITH.
That is trash. We have played better football this season, than any of the past 3 years with Owen. And next year without Owen we will finally mount a serious challenge for the title with Morientes, Baros and Cisse.
If football is banned in heaven. I'd rather go to hell.

i have no doubt that with Michael owen in the team this season we would have a much better season. But i still would not like to see him come back, one things for certain and that is that Owen is not the player he once was, we saw it in his final two seasons at liverpool and regardless of his goals to minutes ratio in spain he still is not the Michael Owen of 2001 - 2002. He will always score goals no doubt, as he is natural predator, but in my opinion lots of owens all round game has diminished in the past few years, most notably his ability to run on to through balls with his pace, which has cleary been lost probably due to years of hamstring problems.

Personally i would like to see a new striker for the new look Liverpool not go backwards for a quick fix like Owen.

when the echo ran this story the headline said liverpool cool on owen return, and i think thats the point.
it`s not that rafa doesn`t rate owen it`s just that rafa probably thinks owen bailed out on him. remember those games when owen was on the bench and rafa couldnt play him because his price would fall? remember when rafa went to euro 2004 to plead with gerrard and owen to stay?
rafa obviously near enough begged owen to stay and michael was having none of it, it wasnt as if michael left the day rafa came, their paths crossed at liverpool for a good few weeks and i think owen left rafa in no doubt where his future lay - hence not playing him in the champions league qualifiers.
remember owens people dragging out his new contract extension for months, this wasnt a rush of blood move like michael tried to make us believe, by not signing a new contract sent out the signals to other clubs.
i think rafa rightly or wrongly, doesnt want him back for personal reasons.
when the real madrid rumours about rafa being their next coach started unlike owen he rubbished them straight away.
what price loyalty? owen obviously believed we were not a big club anymore capable of challenging for the major honours in the game. rafa believes in lfc. there lies the difference.
you`ll never walk alone rafa.
