20 midfielders

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Ciggy » Thu Apr 07, 2005 10:12 pm

We currently have 20 midfielders at the club, is this to many?  How many of these to go end of the season? how many to stay? we are in serious need of defenders, need to reduce this wage bill and get some decent solid defenders in.

John Arne Riise, keep
Harry Kewell,  ??
Steven Gerrard keep
Luis Garcia, keep
Vladimir Smicer, leave
Anthony Le Tallec, keep
Xabi Alonso , hes not going anywhere
Salif Diao, tara
Dietmar Hamann , stay
Antonio Nunez, not sure??

Igor Biscan, one more season?
Richie Partridge, ??
Stephen Warnock, defo keep
John Welsh ??havent seen enough to comment.
Darren Potter , got to want our darren to stay.
Mark Smyth, same as welsh no comment.
Robbie Foy , same as Smyth and Welsh no comment
- Alou Diarra, would like him back but dont think he wants to come back, so probably gone
- David Mannix, gone
- Bruno Cheyrou, tara Zidane
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

You can't really count all of our midfielders from the youth system because I doubt that all of them will play for the senior squad. Welsh and Potter are the exceptions.

Warnock and Riise have played in the midfield but they have also played as defenders so you can count them as defenders as well.

Garcia,ALT are not really midfielders but they play there.

Not Liverpool quality? Hamann has been one of our most solid midfielders over the years, he has been immense as far as protecting the back four goes.

I still don't think that he is quality enough for us...he's solid, but for Liverpool he just doesn't cut it imo

I think your wrong their mate Haman has been quality for the past few tears at
times he has been a unsung hero.
You always need players with his attributes breaking up attacks etc
Just ask Madrid fans and they will tell you

NOt only do we have too many midfielders, we also have too many strikers... so ridiculous, so many useless players to sell...and get some quality players in the team

its a good point, lynds but i don't think we can say that all those players will be competing for the same places. people like warnock and riise are really defenders, though versatile enought to play further forward.alt and garcia are more second strikers and go in our 'lots of strikers' issue :D

most of the younger lads can spend another season playing bit parts as they continue to develop. so that leaves us with:
gerrard - keep of course
alonso - ditto
hamman - another season for us at least
nunez - always improving in my view seeing as he hardly gets any time on the pitch

kewell, smicer, igor, diao, smicer will al be off i guess.

so that doesn't give us SO many. but with players like garcia, riise, warnock versatile enough it gives us, finally, a bit of strength in depth.

combine this with the fact that next season we'll have as out and out strikers - nando, cisse, pongolle - with alt and garcia as second strikers. and apparently owen is all but begging for a return to the 'pool. so we're going to look pretty good.
