international March

I WAS interested to see that Tony Hibbert's teammates were talking up his chances of an England call-up this week.
I like Hibbert as a player and agree that he has improved this season, but I also think he still has some way to go to be good enough for international football.
As a player, he is what I call a proper defender in the same mould as Jamie Carragher. Hibbert has got pace, he has good recovery and he loves a tackle. He is also not concerned who is against him. At Old Trafford earlier this season he took on Ryan Giggs and Cristiano Ronaldo in the same game and did equally well against both.
In international football however, a fullback sees a lot of the ball because defences see them as a get-out pass.
With that in mind, I think Hibbert could stand to build on his passing skills going forward in order to really be able to make his mark for England.
Just look at Ashley Cole. He is solid in defence, but he also carries a threat as an over-lapping full-back. That is the sort of level Hibbert has to try and attain.
I do not think it is beyond him though. Given time and the sort of application he has shown in his career to date, there's no reason why he cannot make it.
As far as the more immediate future is concerned, Hibbert will be playing a key role for Everton in the derby match.
As an onlooker, I'd much rather be in Everton's position than Liverpool's going into the match, as they have the points on the board.
David Moyes could treat the match a bit like a European game because if Everton don't lose, it will be almost as good as a win.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.
