Yep that's the only full Star Wars I've seen.... I seen a bit of the first one (i.e Part I..... not IV) and that is my Star Wars experience

Interestingly, both stories are attempts by their creators to create a mythology.

George Lucas believed that there was no mythology in America (ignoring native American stories and mythology) and he pompously saw Star Wars as an American mythology.

JRR Tolkein also believed that England lacked a mythology (in comparison to Celtic and Norse mythology) and the Lord of the Rings, the Silmarillion and the Hobbit were Tolkein's attempt to create an English mythology which is heavily influenced by Norse and Celtic legends.

I accept that Star Wars has a huge following and it is a cultural phenonem, but you cannot compare Star Wars to Tolkein's Lord of the Rings (as in the book and his other writings). I'm also a big fan of Peter Jackson's films, but even as good as they are, they come no where close to telling the full story or fully capturing all of the underlying themes and stories that Tolkein told.

I see your bizarre obsession with Bob contiues JBG  :D

This thread has really been for those of us who have enjoyed the Star Wars phenomenon...

The comparisons with LOTR was made by others.. personally I enjoyed that trilogy too.. although for me the Two Towers was the best of the three films.. in that trilogy.

Revenge of the Sith .. culminates in the final act of Anakin's conversion from the innocent child to Lord Vadar.. the dark one.. so in that sense it is exciting..

In my opinion the LOTR films are excellent, but the true genius is in the books.

All I say is: Jar Jar Binks.......ewoks. :D :D :D :D

JBG

I was under the impression that Lucas followed a standard story telling formula that has been around for centuries and Start Wars was just this story mythology but in space.  In fact he even admitted this in an interview as the story line takes on a classical genre.  It is similar to Celtic tales which I am familiar with but IMO Lucas' genius is the way he has meticulously created sub plots and dozens of side stories and characters with depth and history.

There is a huge Star Wars industry with historical story lines and different characters that all link in to the main story i.e. the films.

But Tolkien took this to a complete different level and the research he did for his books was immense.

Now Im not a Lord of the rings or Star Wars fan although I appreciate them, but having watched documentaries and read about them I have respect for the two creators as a huge amount of work has gone into the stories.  Tolkien IMO comes out in front as he did the book first while Lucas did it the other way round and books are generally better than films.

But if it was up to me Damien Runyon wins every time

IMO Star Wars is story telling at its most simplistic, often bordering on the childish. Lucas attempts to add a layer of complexity with the whole perversion by the dark side, but you have to admit, this is childs play compared to the whole moral corruption by the power of the ring in Tolkein's books. I'd bet my bottom dollar (if I was a fat American :D ) that Lucan lifted the whole idea of the dark side etc from Tolkein.

Lucas was a good film maker (THX, American Graffitti, Star Wars and the Empire Strikes Back are good films) and a terrific businessman who will go down in history as the man who really broke the mould as far as special effects etc. His work in Star Wars lead the way for the special effects in Alien, Terminator, the Abyss, Aliens, Termiantor 2, Jurassic Park, Independence Day etc, and for that he should be applauded.

However, I just find Star Wars a tad bit simplistic and crowd pleasing for my pallet, thank you very much.

Its typical though that some people here have compared Star Wars to Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films. Its the book, its the book, its the book (even though the films are proper bo as well).

Lucas has stated that the first star wars movie was based on Kurosawa's "Hidden Fortress" .Anyone thats seen the movie will instantly recognise some of the major characters (including C3po and R2d2 ) transposed from feudal japan to a galaxy far far away . Recommend it to all star wars fans , it is however in black and white ,japanese language with english subtitles .

I'm a fan of Akira Kurosawa, woof, and a lot of his films have heavily influenced Hollywood, particularly the Magnificent Seven.

The Seven Samurai and the one which influenced Last Man Standing (Yokimbo?) are terrific, but I haven't seen Hidden Fortress yet.

Have you ever seen Akira Kurosawa's Dreams, with Martin Scorcesse as Vincent Van Gogh? :D

Enjoyed Star Wars trilogy though the prequels have been a bit of a disappointment , just hope that Lucas hasnt spent his entire budget on CGI which are really killing movies and hired himself a decent scriptwriter for the last one

Agreed JBG.  I'm not a fan of fantasy fiction gendre books, but JRRT is a literary genious.  The plots, sub plots, and the way he tells the story is nothing short of perfect.  It is extremely long, and took several attempts to get through it, but it was worth it.  JRRT's  astounding imagination, and his through his writing ability,  the realization of that imagination, is nothing short of perfect.

I also love Star Wars, but to compare the original writings of JRRT to those of Star Wars is obsurd.
