OMG, I was listening to BBC five live radio today at work thru the net....Some ManU fans calling for fergie to resign cos they lost 2-3...

After seeing posts on here week after week changing in tone depending on whether we win or lose I have to come to the conclusion....

The majority of English (british) Football Fans, are knee jerk reactionists. Fan is short for fanatic, I know, but its supposed to represent fanatic supporter, not simply fanatic (mentally imbalanced).

Further proof of this can be found in spurs supporters, who, less than a week ago were calling for managerial blood, but who now are proclaiming the brilliance of the Defoe signing. (mind you hes scored 2 goals in 2 games, whoop tee doo)

Im sorry if this sounds harsh, I apologize to all the fair minded poms. In fact the aim of this post maybe in vain, since the unfair minded will pay it no heed anyway. Sigh. Oh well.

Totally agree.

Three years of great work means nothing to alot of "fans" these days.

They expect you to never make mistakes and they also don't believe its possible to correct mistakes.

True - football fans are fickle. Always have and always will be. Some are more fickle than others. But, remember fans generally say what they say because they are upset, angry or hurting. When my team plays like it has this past 14-15 months it's hurts - in fact it leaves me feeling bloody depressed! Fans often say stuff they don't necessarily mean but they feel all the better for saying it.

Not all of us are fickle.

I was a big supporter of Houllier for his first three years here, and even after the Watford defeat in 1999 and the Grimbsy defeat in 2001 I wasn't howling for Houllier's resignation.

It took about 8-10 months of really bad results for me to start doubting him, and I only started calling for his resignation last October.

It took 12 months of consistantly bad results for me to change my mind about Gerrard Houllier, so I don't consider myself fickle.

I didn't suddenly change my mind again when we beat Chelsea and Newcastle lately, and if Gerrard turns things around (which I hope he does) and we start pulling in some serious results again over a 12 month period, I don't think I would be fickle if I admitted I was wrong about him and started signing his name once more.

I agree that many fans are fickle, and you have to take certain remarks with a pinch of salt, but not everybody that disagrees with Stu et al are idiots...

yeah after finishing 2nd that was the time to really make our intentions clear and strengthen. In all fairness, Diouf, Diao and Cheyrou weren't the players who could take us to the next level.

I am a fan of Houllier's but what boils my blood is the fact he dosen't rectify his mistakes. i.e. Heskey,Diouf

You could argue that the manc supporters see their club declining and fear the same will happen to them as has happened to us. IMO their defence has not been as strong as results would have indicated (up until Ferdinand's enforced absence) Ferguson was too cocky and didn't bother strengthening the defence. Fair enough, Saha was a wise move but the defence has been lacking recently. Brown looks a disaster and one or two of the others are not that solid. Middlesboro showed what can happen at old trafford if you attack the mancs, same as when Fulham won there 3-1 earlier in the season

If we as mere followers of the game can see this, I'm sure Fergie can as well as one who pours over match videos.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, I bet these armchair experts werent suggesting to bolster defence when ferdinand got binned. To be calling for his resignation over a 5 point break by Arsenal, or even for 1 season where they came second instead of first (altho my prediction is 3rd). Sad is all I can say.

As for Brown, fickle, alot of fans also box a player after a few performances. Defoe, Stead....heroes, flavour of the week, Wes Brown...villain and loser of the week. Surely a player can have good and bad patches, I know I do.

And Barnsy, no need to defend yourself, Ive been reading your posts for 6 months now, you dont need to tell everyone you aint fickle.

With the point about fans wanting to vent when they lose, fair enough, it just amazes me cos we are alot different downunder. Although alot of coach blaming takes place, it usually takes more than one result to simmer, usually 2 to 3 bad seasons. And players, well, they are virtually sacred and beyond criticism.
