Rafa - Seems confused

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

i saw this today on liverpoolfc.tv

Rafael Benitez tonight addressed the world's media inside the BayArena and insisted that despite taking a clear two-goal advantage to Germany, he won't be sending out his players to defend from the first whistle.
Liverpool need only avoid a defeat by two clear goals in Germany to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Champions League and Benitez believes the best way of ensuring that happens is to attack Leverkusen from the kick-off.

"We know how important this game is," Benitez said. "We know how well Bayer Leverkusen can play at home and no matter what the result was at Anfield, we know we will have to be at our best against Leverkusen because they are a great team at home.

"I am sure they will try to play with a high tempo and intensity and we will try to do the same. I don't know how to start a game with only defence in mind. Sometimes the best form of defence is attack. We will try to score a goal and keep a clean sheet. If you just go out to defend for 90 minutes then you can make things very difficult for yourself."

the confusing part is where he says that he does not know how to start a game with only defence in mind, can anyone explain then why he has done this for our last two games?

he then basically goes on to admit that he has f*cked up the last two games by admitting that you can not go out and defend for 90 minutes, also pointing out what i have said all along, the best form of defence is attack, let the other team worry about us as opposed to defending 90 minutes while we all sit there sh!tting ourselves in the knowledge that the other team will break us down eventually. anyway know he has said this, if he plays 4-5-1 again tonight i will be very dissapointed, i know we are short on forwards but we still need to play 2 up front.

well i guess the brum/newcastle games were poor and im sure rafa did not intend on a defensive system. they simply could not control the midfield and as a result, it lost both games for us. this might have got to do with the formation (4-5-1). even though he might intend to control midfield and press forwards, but it didnt go to plan. therefore, as you said, a 4-4-2 might suit our play better. this also means we have to leave out either hamann or biscan and either letallec/garcia/or even smicer takes the supporting role, supporting baros. if garcia plays, this means nunez has to slot on the right.

i was talking more about the chelsea and newcastle games as our last two, but you raised some good points, the thought i had was smicer up front with baros

Well last two results or not I would definately play with five in midfield tonight. We've got a two goal headstart so I would be absolutely staggered if he did anything else. Also as far as the interview goes, he hardly going to say "we are going to just defend for our lives because a boring 0-0 draw will suit us just fine". Fact is of course that we will and it would.

i see what your sying bigmick but i still thing the best way to defend is to attack, if they dont have the ball or only have it in their half they cant really hurt us, if we let them attack and have the ball round our box, the chances are we will give away stipud free kicks and give them chances

who the f*ck are you, your obviously a retard

the boss has not been slagged off, a point has been raised that he is somewhat mistaken if he thinks he has not set out to defend in our last two games, let us wait and see if he plays with one forward again tonight. i dont come on here to slag people off, i come to air my views, however in you your case i will make an exception, "go and f*ck yourself you inbred blue nosed piece of sucking f@rts out of dead cats sh!t"

ah that feels better

Bad idea to just defend deep in our own half as we have tended to do on far too many occassions because Leverkusen have excellent long-range shooters who are lethal. Add to this Dudek's uncanny ability to give gift-wrapped goals...potential troubles ahead.
