After experiencing the worst day of his life in Cardiff on Sunday Steven Gerrard remains determined to fulfil his boyhood dream of one day lifting a trophy as Liverpool captain.
Gerrard was left devastated by the 3-2 Carling Cup Final defeat to Chelsea at the Millennium Stadium.
And to compound his misery it was his 79th minute own goal that allowed the Londoners back into the match.
"I said before the game it would either be the best day of my life or the worst. Now it's the worst. I really felt we were going to hold on to the win," says the Reds skipper.
"It was a freak goal which has turned the game their way. I tried to stretch as far as I could to head it away but there was nothing I could do about it. I've never scored an own goal in my life and I can't believe it's happened in a final."
Gerrard was inconsolable at the end of a gruelling 120 minutes action in the Welsh capital but already he's talking of avenging this cruel defeat.
He adds: "I'm gutted for the lads and the supporters but we've now got to try and stay focused on qualifying for the Champions League.
"If we come fourth it will feel like we've won a cup final now because Everton have a big lead over us. This has made me more determined than ever to help us get into the top four. I haven't given up my dream of lifting a trophy as Liverpool captain.
"It's going to be a tough ask for us to win anything this year now, but we'll give it our best shot in the Champions League. Our hopes are still alive. If we get through and Chelsea get through I'd like us to meet them again because I'd fancy our chances."

1 – He will leave in the summer, most likely to Chelsea. I won’t blame him for going. Plus we will get valuable transfer funds that will allow Rafa to rebuild.
2 – He has had a poor 6-10 weeks that continued on Sunday. But he has and always will put in all his effort when playing for Liverpool.
3 – He will remain in the team and as captain for the rest of the season as long as he isn’t injured or suspended.
4 – Has he lost concentration, been distracted by a likely transfer.
Number 4 is the only issue that can be seriously debated.

I've been a big supporter of Stevie G, and I've defended him in the past but after the last four or five weeks, the thought has been creeping into my mind that it's time to cut the cord, grab the cash and start afresh. It's starting to look like the whole situation is really starting to affect the form and spirit of the team. The speculation, rumors, constant conversation and lies floating around the media and the fans is bound to affect the other players and it's hard to fathum any other reason for our violently erratic form of late. Even withen matches, we can look fantastic for twenty minutes, shocking for the next fifteen, mediocre after that and then brillient for the last half hour. Gerrard, one of our finest players of recent years has now become a problem, going from patriotic captain to depressed, lack-lustre, pining for madrid, average player the next.
I believe that one of two things has to happen for the team to settle again. Either he signs a brand new, 5 year contract or he goes and we get the cash to secure two good players. None of us really know what is going on in the minds of Stevie, Rafa or any of the other players. I'd hate to see him going to Chelski, Real or anyone else, but needs must as the devil drives. Who knows what the future brings....?
crazyhorse wrote:Good post. The thing is the Spanish league will be perfect for Gerrard - the added time that you get in that league will allow him to really shine.
He will be a hero over there - perhaps the first very english player to really cut it in Spain?
crazyhorse wrote:The ACE 1983 you are quite right of course. What i meant was the Stevie, with his strength and great range of passing would become a Legend in Spain. The pace is slower and there is more time in midfield for him to exploit. He is a different player than any you mentioned and Macca was good over there but i dont think he will be remembered by the Real fans as we do. Owen has it all to do and will be successful but his time will be limited no matter how many goals he knocks in.
Gerrard could be captain of Real Madrid, and could stay many years and engrave his name in the foundations of the Bernabau.
I would rather he did it here though!
