I cannot agree at all. When you go into a big game you bring your best players, your big game players. Gerrard sitting on the bench would be a waste.

Rafa's blueprint can revive art of winning Feb 24 2005

Exclusive by Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

CHELSEA may head to Cardiff as favourites this weekend, but Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has devised a plan to ensure his players feel like winners before a ball is kicked.

Benitez's final preparations will include a timely reminder to his squad about the joy of success.

The Spanish manager (left) ordered the production of a video highlighting the best moments of the season so far, as well as scenes of jubilation enjoyed by some of the greatest sides.

The video is being played to the Liverpool squad to give them a taste of what could be this Sunday.

"We have prepared videos showing a number of scenes of teams with trophies, celebrating with their fans. These things can motivate players," said Benitez.

"I first used this with the Real Madrid youth teams. We reached some cup finals and it made the players motivated because they could see how good it feels when you win trophies.

"I use images of many teams, including some which have won the World Cup. Since I've been here we've prepared videos of the celebrations after the Arsenal and Olympia-kos victories. The team was celebrating together, and we want all the players to think of themselves as a team in this way.

"I want them to remember how they felt when they won those games so they'll do everything they can to feel that way again.

"I'm sure other managers do the same.

"We also use images of Liverpool fans celebrating these moments so the play-ers can see how important it is to the supporters for their side to play their best football."

For Benitez, the 'winning mentality' can be as important as talent on a cup final day. He is a manager who won't tolerate defeatism, so it comes as no surprise he's admitted to having a quiet word with his skipper after the Reds' Champions League hopes were played down.

An interview Gerrard conducted with BBC radio a week ago was mischievously held back until the eve of the Leverkusen match for maximum impact.

Benitez said: "I spoke with Steven Gerrard and he told me his words weren't presented in the right way. But I said to him, in future it's better to think we can win the Champions League. Why not? We need winners here and everyone thinking only of winning.

"I always want to win. If I lose, all I think about is why we lost. When we lose, I only think about solutions. If you only think about winning the next game, you don't know what the draw will be.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

for obvious reason: Gerrard and Hamann should be in the lineups
Biscan was absolutely decent against leverkusen, but that doesn't mean he is now  or averagely above gerrard or hamann.

Gerrard has to play. He started the season well.....went thru a black patch...I have every faith in him ending the season well. Gerrard can also score goals and with riise, kewell & baros, i fancy us to get a goal or 2 in germany.

No matter what, you play your strongest team

So you're suggesting that Gerrard hasn't proved his worth becaause he hasn't been "Superman" in every game ,but on the other hand Biscan who has only turned in two decent performances this season should retain his place ?

Seems to me this anti Gerrard movement is more to do with some fans personal gripes with Gerrard rather than the mans ability .

Never thought I would see the day when some so called "LFC supporters" would call for their club captain and best player to sit on the bench while he's replaced  by some player who until very recently had done absolutely nothing to suggest he was part of Liverpools future .

If this is the standard of football comment and perception in this forum no wonder I find myself spending less and less time in here .

stevie will play should play. How stu the blue can say he hasn't been in the right frame of mind for these big games is unbelievable. His last big game? Olympiakos need i say more? The guys immense he breathes liverpool. Stu the blue keep quiet.

Olympiakos... Yellow? Did you even watch the game? Where you from lad? Another aisian red who's never been to a game in ya life? ??? wouldn't suprise me in the slightest.

Lets look at our other big games this season... Man Utd home and away and Everton... Were was he in those games?

The answer... strolling around pitch thinking he was some sort of god. He was absoloutely shocking in all of these games, it wasn't until Hamann came on for him at old trafford we looked the better side. He didn't even put the effort in, he was just rubbish in these games from start to finish.

The lads so overated its unreal, he produces his best form 3 every 10 games and then supporters think he's some sort of genius. In terms of ability he's got it all, absoloutely everything, he's got world class ability with the exception of consistency. Last season he was consistent and starting to convince me he was the player people said he was, at the start of the season this year he continued that form, since christmas though, i'd rather have had Alonso and Hamann in the middle as apose to Stevie. I'd be very suprised if he doesn't start against Leverkusen and i'd also be very pleasantly suprised if he doesn't have a stinker and we get knocked out.

If i'm wrong, after the game i'll hold my hands up, but i have a a feeling that away goal was scored for a purpose. They always are.
then Houllier took off Hamann (when he was our most valuable player on the night) and brought on Smicer when we were defending for our lives and they needed to score 2 more!! That substitution still gives me nightmares, we'd have been in the semi final if it wasnt for that.

Did you even go to that match? I'm sick to death of hearing this. Taking Hamann of wasn't the problem. There system was a 3-6-1, there was ****** all any two central midfielders could have done against there midfield. Abosoloutely ****** all. Hamann was having a SHOCKING match, he was playing poorly and he got dragged off for it. The mistake wasn't going to three at the back, and man for man in midfield, not taking Hamann off. I'm so sick of hearing this ****** excuse.

true alot of supporters who dont go the match seem to worship gerrard but for the rest of us who have watched him sroll round and disapear in big games its a different story

good shout woof.

it seems that the standards gerrard set for himself by playing like "superman" for about 50 games, is working against him as when he doesnt play like that some fans are calling him into question.

its not the time for experimenting with mind-games and psychlogical warfare. that is a minor factor when it comes to playing the game for f*ck sake.

We have to play him he is one of our best players,

But if he goes expect things to get nasty. To quote Ballack perhaps from another topic.  We sell SG because he wants to win things as he has been saying and with loads of money we bid for Ballack, along with other clubs.  So he thinks LFC well their best player doesnt reckon they will win things and him a local lad etc etc so WHAT WOULD YOU DO.

Its already starting with some quotes about were not a one man team and were one big happy family etc.  Now as much as SG has been dropping hints I would imagine the club are going to as well to protect their interests i.e. we are going for trophies the league etc so come and join us.

This to me will lead to an inevitable clash unless of course he stays but if its staying with the same will he wont he cloud is it worth it for the team for Rafa and for SG, but SG will not committ so it could be lets see what he does next year but Rafas job is longer term and involves the whole squad so these two forces just have to collide.

Now I dont know SG but funnily enough I know a man who actually does and its all great lad etc etc down to earth knows where he comes from blah blah but it does look to me like he has changed this season and maybe the hooha in the summer has affected him but then again who knows.  But if he doesnt committ in some way I can see a nasty clash and if that happens I would hope everybody remembers the good times with him

Interesting the way you're all quick to have a go but no-one can come up with a valid arguement as to why he should play.

the fact that he's our best player not good enough?
the fact Biscan not as proven not good enough?
the fact its not the time for mind games over ability not good enough?
the fact he's our captain not good enough?

stu theres millions of arguments been stated, are they just "not valid"?
