i think folk here are presuming too much. unless you all are qualified psychologists, you should talk about how good the score was last, which will be well within your mental capabilities

Is SG the first player to say the wrong thing to the media ? Why dont we just wait and see what happens and just suppourt the the team for the remainder if the season. The media will do enough speculating and guessing for all of us. Nobody knows what goes through SG head so until he says im leaving I treat him like all the other players in the squad and hope he performs when he puts on the red shirt.:D

Quite simple to me judge, why get worked up over speculation and guess work. SG will learn how to deal with the media more effectively as he gets older. HAve you heard some of Beckhams interviews as england captain ? :)

good article off RAWK

The two main problems with Steven Gerrard are that he's a young scouser and from South Liverpool. This results in him being a depressive sod 99% of the time and giving downbeat interviews that could have been directed by Mike Leigh. Quite simply genetics and geography have turned him into a miserabilist.

Firstly the age thing - scousers for generations have been known as friendly, warm, garrulous  people with a great sense of humour. They've been the pinnacle of the Lancashire spirit which saw music halls earlier in the century, then TV later, dominated by comedians from the north west and Liverpool in particular. In contrast there's never been a comedian from Yorkshire - a cold county full of cold humourless people.

However the Nova-Scouser (TM pending) is dour, cynical and taciturn with a permanent scowl on their face*. Gerrard is merely a product of this generation. Its King. No longer is it considered the done thing to crack a joke, smile or be positive among the New Scouse Generation.

Stevie's other problem is he's from South Liverpool and this exacerbates the situation. Eh, hang on he's from Huyton I hear you say, wasn't he born in Whiston hospital. Surely that's central/east Liverpool? Yes, very true, but Huyton has always been the refugee camp for those escaping South Liverpool in the same way that Kirkby is populated by those fleeing North Liverpool. Different tribes. And as we all know North Liverpolitans have always been far funnier (and harder by the way) than South Liverpolitans. Kirkbyites are jocular, hopeful people as a result. Huytonites the opposite.

If you plot cheerfulness on a graph with age on the x axis and south Liverpool at 0 and North Liverpool at 10 on the y axis you'll find Stevie G is fighting overwhelming odds in an attempt to smile. In contrast the theory suggests that Jamie Carragher, Bootle boy born and bred, should come out beaming. And practice shows he does - he's well known as the squad's joker and you'll never find him suggesting we can't win a trophy. His pint is always three quarters full. And look at Carra's Dad who not only has North Liverpool but age in his favour. Last week he fought to get back into an England friendly. That's a work of comedic genius.

So next time you see a Stevie G interview and start to despair, just remember everything has conspired against him. And that the only solution is for the club doctor to prescribe him prozac.

In my opinion thats what we do on a forum. Speculate. Guess. State our point of view. Question other peoples point of view. Try and predict what a players thinking or what they'll do next. Thats why we bother to post.

On topic that RAWK article sums up Stevie well but it was still a thoughtless comment to make on the eve of a crucial match, and I still think that when he's struggling with the big decisions his football suffers. Euro 2004 for example.

some positive, encouraging words from our Cpatain - from lfc.tv.

Steven Gerrard is confident Liverpool can upset the odds in Cardiff on Sunday and enable him to fulfil a boyhood dream.
The Reds go into the Carling Cup Final against triple trophy chasing Chelsea with Gerrard admitting they are the outsiders in the battle to lift the first major trophy of the season.

But the Anfield skipper believes he and his team-mates have nothing to fear against the mega-rich Londoners.

He cites Liverpool's previous experience of playing at the Millennium Stadium and the encouraging performance they turned in against Jose Mourinho's men on New Years Day as the reasons for his optimism.

"During the course of your career you don't get the chance to play in many finals so when they do come along you have to grasp the opportunity with both hands and try your best to win it," he told Liverpoolfc.tv in an exclusive pre-Cup Final interview.

"Chelsea will be well up for it because they are chasing three trophies but this is our best chance of lifting a trophy this season and we'll be giving it our best shot.

"It'll be strange going into the final as underdogs. If you previewed a match between Liverpool and Chelsea a few years ago you'd have said Chelsea were the underdogs but what Roman Abramovich has done at Stamford Bridge means they are now the favourites.

"Sometimes that can work against you though. We've got a good record at Cardiff and I think the pressure is on Chelsea. Everyone is expecting them to win it so we're going there with the intention of upsetting the odds.

"I think we've given it a good go against all the top sides at Anfield this season, including Chelsea, and proved that the gap between them and ourselves is not too big. We are still a little bit off the top three, which is disappointing, but I'm sure that, given time, the manager can get us back up there."

Gerrard has also revealed just what it would mean to him if he does end up hoisting the Carling Cup high into the Welsh sky this weekend.

"It would a massive thing for me to lift that cup in Cardiff, especially with this being my first full season as captain," he adds.

"I've always said it would be a dream come true to lift a trophy for Liverpool. I know the Carling Cup is not renowned as the most illustrious of competitions but it's still a major trophy and I'm sure if we win it you'll see exactly what it means to me by the look on my face."

i'd like to fed you up with this other annoying news: :p

Reports today claim that Steven Gerrard's 21-year-old girlfriend Alex Curran is preparing to head to Madrid with family and friends to examine the area and to view properties, should the couple opt for a life in Spain.

Speculation continues to rumble on about the Liverpool skipper's future with Real Madrid and Chelsea both keen to sign him in the summer. Conflicting reports circulate every day of the week about the player but truth be told, it's unlikely anyone will know exactly what he will do until the summer.

A source close to the player is today quoted as saying that Gerrard's girlfriend will play a huge role in influencing his decision.

She said: "Alex wants to escape Liverpool and Steven is aware of this. She likes the idea of living in London to be with friends but she hasn't closed the door on a a life in Spain.

"The only thing she's worried about is if they move to Madrid, they could be isolated. A fortnight from now she's going there (Madrid) to spend a few days shopping. She's great pals with Louise Bonsall (Michael Owen's girlfriend) but she might be returning to England later in the year.

"Both familes have different views about what their next move should be. Steven's family want him to stay at Liverpool and to live in the city where as her family just want them to be happy wherever they are.

"Steven and his agent have a meeting with Rick Parry in April so you would expect the couple to have a good idea of their plans by then."
