Liverpool legends to return to Anfield

Former Liverpool players Jason McAteer and David Johnson are arranging a Liverpool Legends side to face a Celebrity XI in aid of the Asian Tsunami disaster.

Robbie Fowler is said to be amongst the 22 star names set to return to Anfield for the match on March 27th. Kenny Dalglish and Kevin Keegan are also set to put their boots back on for the charity match.

Chairman David Moores has provided Anfield stadium and staff for the event which McAteer hopes can be a continued effort to raise funds for 'Tsunami Soccer Aid'.

McAteer told liverpoolfc.tv "We see 'Tsunami Soccer Aid' as having longevity - long after this charity match, and hope to organise further fund raising events in the future."

And Johnson said "Every single former player I have asked to play in this game has said yes. Not one former player has said they can't make it. We are talking about the biggest names ever to represent Liverpool Football Club and we'll have 22 of them playing on the day. More names will be released nearer the time."

If ever a coach wanted to show kids what he meant by "let the ball do the running" this match was it! Barnes, Molby, Whelan and Johnson no longer had the legs but passed the ball around the Celebs effortlessly in the first half.

Jason McAteer - a major player in organising the event, along with David Johnson - opened the scoring with his and Fowler's fitness providing no ends of problems for the hapless Celeb defence. Man United fan Ralph Little tried in vein to stop the Reds.

The match was played in good spirit with more funny moments than flashes of brilliance - McFly's Danny Jones tripping over the ball and burying his head in the ground only for Alan Kennedy to pick him up and stand back as he nut-megged the legend.

Chelsea fan Tim Lovejoy was getting plenty of stick as the celebs fell three goals behind the Soccer AM phrase of 'Easy, Easy' was coined by the Kop and Lovejoy took it in good heart, playing along and making the waving action with his arms.

The goal of the match was DJ Harvey's run from inside his own half and beating the ageing defence to rifle past Bruce Grobelaar at the Kop end. The LFC fan was clearly made up to have scored such a goal most fans have dreamt of doing.

The usual matchday atmosphere was replaced with a family occasion and the only time the crowd did get lively was the arrival of King Kenny Dalglish who enjoyed a 20 minute cameo, along with son Paul.

Dalglish’s introduction sparked The Kop into life and a rendition of Fields of Anfield Road brought the only chant of the day.

A lap of honour allowed players and celebrities to thank the fans and take in what will no doubt be their final appearances at Anfield.
