According to Gerard Houllier we are still in three competitions. Just how far do you think we will go in these "competitions" and can we win any of them? Come the end of the season, will we have won a trophy or Houllier kept his job by finishing 4th?

Probably a Champions League place (god willing) but not much else  :(

Dont blame everything on GH, im not his biggest fan either, but injuries have been a problem, and I was critcal at the signings he had made thinkin they were s##t, but seeing a player like Bruno play the way he has been ... gives us hope  !

The FA Cup is not beyond us, especially given that we have Portsmouth at home (I think Pompey will be more worried about relegation than winning the Cup).

Whatever criticism that you may levy at Gerrard Houllier (and there are many) his teams have always preformed excellently in the cups. Despite all our problems we are as good a bet as anyone for the FA Cup.

The UEFA Cup will be harder, especially given that Valencia are still in the competition (they are, aren't they?). Very few teams have spanked us while Gerard Houllier has been in charge, but every time we have played Valencia since the start of Houllier's regime they have given us the run around and their form recently in Spain has been absolutely phenonemal.

Getting the 4th spot will be tough.....it's between us and Newcastle, and I can see both us and them starting to pick up form as the season goes down to the wire.

I'm not sure what to think about doing well in the FA Cup, to be honest its one that winning would be a big morale boost (since its got all our Premiere League rivals in it).  UEFA Cup is different, other than Valencia if we get the fourth CL spot, we won't be playing for the League title.  But hey, if Porto can win it, we can ace it   :;):

Are we 21 points behind Arsenal or am I mistaken? That means we have to win 7 games while Arsenal lose 7 games. That is unlikely considering a) Arsenal haven't lost ONE game in 23 matches and b) there are only 15 games remaining and Arsenal aren't likely to lose half of them.  Of course that is just to catch Arsenal, the mancs are only two points worse off.......

If you don't count teams like Bolton winning at Anfield this season and Crystal Palace last season. Not to mention the Celtic fixture last season

I've gone for Uefa and CL place.

I'd be content with a champions league place. Next season tho has to see dramatic improvements and the right signings.

1st season - settling in phase, no real targets
2nd season - pushing for a top six place minimum at a club this size
3rd season - pushing for CL place and possible trophies
4th season - settling into top four, outside possibility of a push for championship and/or trophies but not requirement
5th season - top three finish minimum and should really push the top two. Four seasons is more than enough to get the team right and they should already be established in the top three or four as of right

Unfortunately we are still at the stage I would expect us to have been in our third season under Houllier. No progress in two years is not good enough

3 years to turn a team of dead wood into a cup winning side?

seriously? ur having a laugh aren't you?

Apart from Houllier and Wenger name someone who's done that? As for Wenger he went to an arsenal side that had a whole defence and and a keeper who'd played together for years... Houllier had practically f##k all apart from a few kids.

Your expectations are unrealistic.

1st season - start clearing out the squad and bringing in your own players and starting to set a style of play.
2nd season - try and bring in improvements and improve the squad size mainly looking at younger players with potential.
3rd season - with an established style start adding class players into the system aswell as trying to develope the youth.
4th season - start looking to finish in a CL place and looking to be a good cup side capable of beating anyone on there day. looking for consistency now aswell. the style of play should be established and in place with most of the right players.
5th season - starting to look a side capable of challenging and having the core of the squad in place, just needing minor tweaks to adjust and the odd player and some silverwhere expected maybe injuries and suspensions permitting.
6th season - good enough to win the championship or at least mount a serious challenge.
7th season - same as 6th. the squad should be complete and looking to be improved further for europian dominance.

what a load of complete bollix, under the stu masterplan we should wait until the third year before we bring in a decent player. We spend the second year TRYING to make improvements, not making improvements but at least we are trying. We should bring in younger players and then wait until the following season before we bring in some class,WHY?Also you omit to mention how we transform from a middling premiership team in the fourth year to champions in the sixth?
