Hope carra goes on to play another 500 league games for us. He has been absolutely marvellous this season. A deffo for player of the season in my view.

RAFA HAILS RECORD BREAKER CARRA

Rafael Benitez today hailed Jamie Carragher after the Reds' defensive rock set a new Premiership record for Liverpool.
Carragher played his 241st Premiership game for the Reds at Charlton in midweek - edging ahead of Steve McManaman as the player to play most league games for the Reds since the inception of the Premiership back in 1992.

Benitez admits Carragher doesn't always receive the credit his consistent performances merit, but he is in no doubt of his importance to the Liverpool team.

He said: "Carra is a fantastic person both on and off the pitch. On the field he is a great player and off it he is a great man to have around the dressing room.

"It's always difficult for the defenders to get praise because usually that's kept for the scoring midfielders or the strikers. He might not get the credit he deserves outside of this club but we know how important he is to our team.

"I have worked with some great defenders at Valencia such as Marchena, Pellegrino and Ayala. If you say to me that Ayala was the best then I would say Carragher is not a worse player than Ayala.

"I am sure he will go on to play many, many more games for Liverpool because he is an important part of our future."

No disrespect Rock (or else I'll be at the wrong end of a People's Elbow) but Premiership "records" are nonsense and are the preserve of Man UTD fans and Sky Sports.

Premiership/old Division one, they're both the same in football terms.

Records are indeed nonsence, but when Rafa compares Carra to Ayala it makes you thankful to have such a great player and person playing for you.

i have visions of carra ending his goal drought by heading the winner from a corner against chelski. it would be the perfect tale, considering how outstanding he's been this season. :)

Everyone always goes on about Terry this and Rio that. The one player who has played a possitive role in every game and has done simply what needs to be done, brilliantly. We're lucky to have this guy.

Carra is indeed a great presence to the side and an influential player on and off the park. But to slag off Terry and Lampard is a nonsense, they are both quality players. Lets not become like other fans and bad mouth players simply coz they are at another club.

yeah i agree, sky try to airbrush out the old division 1 history.
carra is playing well and has a fair few games under his belt but lets face it if fans want to see a real record look no further than cally`s. ian took over from billy liddell in the late 50`s against bristol rovers (i think) and went right through to the end of the seventies. i cant remember off the top of my head but i think it was around 860 odd appearances at the highest level, not just plodding through games in the lower divisions he was involved in league titles, fa cup finals, eufa / european cup finals etc right up till he retired. a true legend.

I never realised I was an Anfield record-breaker! Feb 4 2005

By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

JAMIE CARRAGHER rewrote the Liverpool history books on Tuesday, breaking the club's appearance record in the Premiership.

The defender made his 241st league outing for the club in the 2-1 win over Charlton. This eclipsed the previous record held by Steve McManaman.

Carragher admits he knew nothing about the accolade until after the match, but says he is proud to have reached such an outstanding total.

"The first I knew about it was when someone told me. I wasn't keeping a check on it," said the 27-year-old.

" Obviously I'm very proud to have played so many games for Liverpool and I hope I will take the record even further. I've no intention of ever leaving the club during my Premiership career, so maybe in a few years time I can set a total which will be very difficult for anyone to beat.

"There have been a lot of great players here during the Premiership era and it shows you how well Steve McManaman did when he was at the club. He seemed to play week in, week out without ever getting injured. "I've had a couple of injuries over the years, but fortunately not that many and that helps when you want to play every week.

"I think 'Macca' probably played in a lot of Liverpool matches before the league changed to the Premiership, so maybe he's a bit unlucky I've not had to go further to catch him."

Carragher made his Liverpool debut as central midfielder in January, 1997, when he was still 19. He scored against Aston Villa, although the goals have dried up for the schoolboy striker since.

Having excelled at left-back and right-back, Carragher is now firmly established at centre-half, where he will continue for the visit of Fulham at Anfield tomorrow.

If he is ever to break the overall league appearance record at Anfield, though, Carragher still has a fair bit to go.

Anfield legend Ian Callaghan made 848 appearances in all over a 17-year period, including 640 in the league.

"I've seen the number of appearances Ian Callaghan made and I can't believe his total," said Carragher. "They must have included five-a-side matches in the old days. Even if I played for another 10 years I'm not sure if I could get close to that!"

Callaghan, however, paid a rich tribute to the man chasing his all-time target - no matter how distantly!

"I'm delighted Jamie's got this record because he's a fantastic player and a great lad," he said.

"I've bumped into him a few times at the match when he's been injured - which isn't all that often mind - and he's always been a great lad to talk to.

" You know you're always going to get 110 per cent out of him in every game - and this season he's definitely been Liverpool's most consistent performer.

" The way the squad system is these days I think my record's probably safe for a few years yet... but I'm delighted Jamie's got the Premiership record.

"It couldn't have happened to a nicer lad or a more dedicated player."

All great players, all great servant to the club. Seeing JC now reminds me of those greats players of the past...as a supporter for over 30 years, I salute you!

Couldn't agree more, people who think that football was invented in 1992 need to go support Man Utd.
