Rumours - Concerning us

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby The_Rock » Sun Jan 30, 2005 6:18 am

Don't wanna create a david thompson thread seeing there are not many sites reporting this. So created a generic one to report this.

I, for one would like david thompson to return. Yes, i would rather have SWP or pennant (why didn't we bid for him, surely he would have chosen us over brimingham...???). But david thompson will be cheap and will do "more than a decent" job at right wing.

Lets face it, he will deffo do a better job than garcia & nunez there. Garcia should only play centre midfielder or support striker for me. And nunez is a squad player in my opinion.

David thompson was the best player for blackburn until his injury...... He would be great if he can re-produce his form here.

But it looks like a long-shot. Rafa seems to prefer players from spain.

Former Red linked with shock return

Liverpool are being linked with a move for Blackburn Rovers midfielder David Thompson today.

Thompson was sold to Coventry City by former manager Gerard Houllier after numerous attempts to change his on the pitch behaviour had failed. Thompson got the message though and played himself back into the Premiership again when Rovers bought him from Coventry just before he made his England debut.

The player has faced a few layoffs through injury however and his development has stalled as he was not called up for the England squad again.

Everton are currently in the hotseat to sign the player and have placed a 3 million pound bid firmly on the table for Blackburn to take or leave. The Toffees see him as a good replacement for Thomas Gravesen who left Goodison Park for Real Madrid earlier this month.

Liverpool's interest for the player has yet to be confirmed by any solid source but there is no doubt the 27-year-old would improve a Liverpool squad that is currently very thin in midfield with Xabi Alonso and Vladimir Smicer on the treatment table. It is not known whether Thompson would even want to move back to Anfield to fight for a place he is pretty much guaranteed at Everton.

We suggest not to get your hopes up for now as there are only a few days left in the transfer window and Rafael Benitez has gone very quiet in regards to new signings. The Spaniard may well be saving his pennies with Champions League qualification far from certain at this stage in the season.

There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

Liverpool in talks with goalkeeper

Newspaper reports today claim that Liverpool have opened talks with Luton Town goalkeeper Dean Brill, a player who has been scouted by us for some time.

It is claimed that the highly-rated youngster has been invited to Melwood to tour the facilities and discuss a possible deal despite the recent signing of Scott Carson from Leeds United.

The 19-year-old is out of contract in the summer but could be snapped up for £200,000 now.

Benitez keeping close eye on Reina

RAFAEL BENITEZ will continue to monitor the progress of promising Villarreal goalkeeper Pepe Reina despite adding Scott Carson to the Liverpool ranks last week.

Reina, one of several young keepers scouted by the Anfield coaching staff this season, yesterday admitted he would relish the chance to join Liverpool's Spanish contingent.

The 22-year-old has been instrumental in Villarreal's rise to seventh in the Primera Liga and the last 32 of the UEFA Cup this season.

His impressive performances have attracted interest from Benitez and several European coaches this season. And though Carson's arrival from Leeds has eased the need for young reinforcements the Liverpool manager will consider a summer move for Reina if Jerzy Dudek or Chris Kirkland move on.

Reina, who started his career at Barcelona, said: "Everyone would be excited by the chance of playing for a big club, although I would not say I am at a small club.

"I think they (Liverpool) are building an important project looking to the long term more than the short term. I hope they have a lot of luck.

"There are comments and rumours... but from there to possible truths, there is a long way."

Stephane Henchoz's proposed move to Celtic, meanwhile, is in doubt after a medical at Parkhead was postponed yesterday.

The Liverpool defender has attracted interest from both Old Firm clubs as they seek the Swiss international on a free transfer.
