All time greatest xi?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Not sure if this has been ever done before on this forum but I thought it would be good for us to reminisce on times gone by and name your greatest ever Liverpool XI.

Naturally the older fans will have a better idea, as the have seen a lot more of players from the "glory days" than younger fans like myself have, who have to go on what they have seen on DVD's and highlights packages as well as what they have read and heard about players.

I realise that this is a very hard to to nail it down to 11 players as their have been so many great players for Liverpool down the years, but it should bring some good debate amongst us.

Here is mine

                               R.Clemence

P.Neal        A.Hansen         E.Hughes ©     A.Kennedy

I.Callaghan        G.Souness      S.Gerrard              J.Barnes

                     K.Dalglish            I.Rush

Manager: Shanks.

Gerrard is perhaps a controverisal one, but being young I have seen so much of him and he is quite simply brilliant so I just had to put him in there. He and Souness running the midfield would be very frightening for the opposition.

God this is Hard....

                                    Grobellar

Neal                  Hansen           CrazyHorse  ©         Kenedy

Heighway           Souness          Gerrard                Barnes

                        Dalglish           Keegan

Really hard to work this out. There are more who should be in the side than there are spaces - to leave out the likes of Jimmy Case and Ian Rush feels like sacralidge

Grobellaar? ???!!!!  ???  ???  ???

I'd love to find a place for Fowler in the all time best x1 but even he can't eclipse Rushie and the one and only King Kenny

1. Clemence
2. Neal
3. A Kennedy
4. Hughes
5. Hansen
6. Souness
7. Dalglish
8. R Kennedy
9. Rush
10. Barnes
11. Heighway

Sub Grobelaar
Sub Gerrard
Sub Lawrenson
Sub Owen
Sub Molby

The team has ball players at the back who can bring the ball forward and link up the team whilst still being excellent defenders

In midfield the choice was hard between Kennedy and Gerrard as I would love to see Souness and SG but went for Kennedy as a man whos passing would release the forwards and the flank men who would be ably assisted by Neal and A Kennedy

Kenny and Rush up front need I say more

Souness with the pivotal role of protecting the back four at the start of the game a job he truly excelled in

Ray Kennedy to link with Kenny and aim to release the flanks and support the front two

Kenny and Rush need I say more

Look at the subs bench speaks for itself

clemence

     smith         hansen           hughes     alan kennedy

Liddell             Souness         Gerrard               Barnes

                     The King               Rush

thats the team that would win anything, i included Liddell even though im too young to have seen him play, but by reputation alone he would be there. otherwise i had the privelage of watching all the other players. i went with Tommy Smith at right back over Neal as he was underestimated as a player, sure he could damage people but he could also play football.

all the other players speak for themselves

You could stick Ray Clemence in goal, get Tommy Smith to stand in the Liverpool box and then get John Barnes from 1987-1990 and Dalglish of 1977 to 84 to play on their own outfield and they would have beaten almost anyone.

Barnes was a decent player in the 1990s under Souness and later Evans but I feel sorry for younger fans who didn't see him play under Daglish. The difference in today's terms would be the difference in Arjen Robben and Kevin Kilbane.

still the best liverpool player i've ever seen live. in the late eighties digger was almost unstoppable at times. i remember on goal he scored (i think it was against QPR) which made his goal for england against brazil look like a tap in.

In my opinion Michael, that goal against QPR was possibly the greatest goal I have ever seen scored by a Liverpool player. There was a Maradona quality to it where he just sliced through the opposition defence like a God and all the other players just stood there in awe.

1987/88 season I think?

quite possibly jbg. it was at the time when barnes and beardsley were undoubtedly the two most influential players in the first division.

god knows what that side could have achieved in europe if english sides weren't banned. forget barca-chelsea, us against the ac milan team of the late eighties would probably have been the dream match up of all time.
