Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Finnons been the best liverpool player over the last 2 games. His performances at Wolves and Against Newcastle were propbably his best in a  LFC shirt and his interplay with Le Tellac and Gerard's forceful runs turned it for us as newcastle were easily the better team first half. What really encouraged me about Saturdays game was the fans, whether its cos there is a different make up of fans for cup games as opposed to Prem games i can't say but "we" were magnificant on Saturday and played our part in a very evenly balanced game. :p

It was obvious to see that the key to our victory was the defence, the the first half perfromance gave us a platform to build on. If we can keep the same defence and Hamann in the team we will be much stronger for it.

I thought that was Kewell's worst match for us, Gerrard was avearge in the first half but improved massively in the second, Owen still looks a bit rusty. But Cheyrou is improving with every match.

I think most people didn't realise the difference Le Tallec made, Heskey kept falling over and loseing the ball, and when he got one on one with the keeper, the ball was going wide before bernard tackled him. For me Le Tallec was impressive, he showed great maturity, he held the ball up, this is something we have been missing, he had a huge influnce on the game.

I think its time Gerrard took more responsibilty attacking wise. If he wants to play in the middle alongside an anchor man he has to realise that he is the main link to the strikers, he has to get in the box more and also start chipping in with some goals, I would like to see more of what he done in the second half against Newcastle.

We looked more solid because we had a solid centre of defence. Henchoz was great on Saturday IMO and we didn't look like leaking that crucial goal like we did with Biscan there. Carragher looked solid enough, fair point, but the right hand side of defence where Biscan played has been the source of many conceded goals

My two cents:

1. We played well on Saturday, especially in the second half.

2. The returning players made a difference and will improve the side as their match fitness comes back.

3. We still gave the ball away cheaply.

4. Henchoz defended superbly.

5. Playing Heskey on the right in an attempt to stiffle Bernard (similar to the game in St. James Park) was a very negative approach by Houllier, given that we were at home.

6. Finnan improved as the game wore on but his crossing in the first half was terrible.

7. Carragher played superbly.

8. The age old problem of breaking small clubs down at home still exists. What happens when a team like Charlton comes to Anfield looking for a draw?

9. We are still far from perfect and I can still see a few banana skins along the way.

10. However, watching Saturday's game I felt optimisitic for the first time since our early wins over Blacburn and Everton.

Finally Stu, people who criticised Liverpool this year are not morons. As Superred said, one swallow doesn't make the summer.

By the way, does anybody know who hung that massive banner criticising Houllier?

Stu were did I say finnan was'nt playing well tell me where? I said I personally preferred Otsemobor at right back with finnan being used in the right mid-field.

So get your facts right before mis-quoting me! Its so inane to twist peoples words you should be working for new labour!
