When i first heard about the possibility of yakubu coming instead of anelka i was pretty annoyed as i preffered anelka. But when you check the stats of both players yakubu actually has a better record.

YAKUBU:
Portsmouth: 2002-2003 Played 14 Scored 7 goals (on loan 13/1/2003)

Transferred in May 2003

Portsmouth: 2003-2004 Played 37 Scored 16 goals
2004-2005 Played 17 Scored 8 goals

ANELKA:
Manchester City: 2002-2003 Played 38 Scored 14 goals (Premiership)
2003-2004 Played 32 Scored 16 goals (Premiership)
2004-2005 Played 16 Scored 6 goals (Premiership)

Now considering that anelka plays for a better team and takes the penalties you have to say that yakubu actually has a better record than anelka. Just because Yakubu isn't the high profile name like anelka or morientes doesn't mean that he wouldn't be just as good if not better than anelka. ???

Yakubu - sorry - I think someone else has already said it - he reminds me too much of Heskey
Don't get me wrong - I used to love big Emile - thought he was one of the best squad players we had - but he didn't exactly get a lot of goals for Liverpool - and he used to get slated more than most on this forum
Having said that - we did used to play him on the wing, midfield etc
So who knows - maybe if they did go for Yakubu - and he was played in his natural position - he could be blindin
???

Southernscouser.

Heskey played "on the wing" for Liverpool 9 times in 4 seasons.

Thats not even three games a season. So don't make stupid excuses up for a waster.

stu
don't be so quick to jump down peoples throats when they happen to make a comparison
Obviously you are stu "Statstics" the red???
Just because Mr Heskey was put down on the team sheet at a specific position doesn't mean to say he didn't drift into different positions in many a game
furthermore please enlighten me "o Great Stato" as to your definition of a waster - is it purely based on scoring goals as opposed to anything else they happen to do on the park - like maybe - an assist ??

Don't know why I'm even bothering to waste my finger energy on you !
Typical response on here from a well known "Attention Seeker"

Waster meaning he had all the talent to be one of the best players in the country yet only has the mental strength of a quilt.

Frustrating and annoying player. Simply not good enough.

I remember him in his first season and Chelsea away last season. That what Heskey should have been about. Instead he was more often than not about the miss at anfield in the last minute last year. Falling on his fat ******.

And does that mean Houllier played Gerrard everywhere becuase he covered all that ground last season? No it doesn't.

you may have a point Stu
but you make it sound like Heskey had the potential but not the hunger or desire
it may have been down to this,to a degree - but having it drummed into you that your the big hitter for the more skillfull youngest English Striker
(at the time) to feed off
and then being played out of position occasionally & not just at club level but by the England Manager as well
If it doesn't work out - of course it's gonna effect your confidence
Heskey's demise (or lack of fulfillment) whichever way you want to look at it - was not soley down to him not wanting it - there were many other factors (club & country) conspiring against him

I feel Yakubu will struggle even to have a season like Heskey's before he joined LFC. Don't forget, Heskey was banging them in for Leicester, which is quite parallel to what we're seeing from Yakubu, and at about the same age.

Does this mean Yakubu will not even amount to more than a player of Heskey's ability? Who knows. I am certain that for Yakubu's likely price, there are many better options at the moment. Perhaps this will change in future. However, I must admit that a player's pure 'ability' will not mean much if he simply does not fit in well into a team. We DO need a player to lead the line with a bit of power, and trickery, to share the pressure with Baros and whomever we bring in next.

I also cannot stress this enough; aside from Hyypia, we lack a player to finish with authority from headers.

If he had the arrogance/self confidence he'd have become something immense. He wasn't there for Owen to feed off.

He was there because he complimented Owen. In the first season thats EXACTLY what happened. There after it was only shown in the odd game as Michael had to do Heskey's job for him more often than not.

He didn't have the arrogance and belief to become a great player himself.

I know for a fact that if i played with someone as good as Owen i'd thrive off it. When you play with a better player it relieves the pressure on you allowing you to play to a high standard. Heskey couldn't manage this and at times seemed in "awe" (however you say it) of Michael. If anything playing with Owen should have boosted his confidence as he should have been safe in the knowledge that he didn't have to do it on his own and those two at there best could get the bteter of anybody. However, because he is a quilt, it didn't work like that.

For me, there is one word that summed up Emile Heskey perfectly. That word is frustrating. In the 4 years that he was at our club, his performances veered from the sublime, to the downright atrocious.

Three games stand out for me. The away game at Derby County in 2000 when he showed all his attributes of power, pace and strength to score a hat-trick. The game at Elland Road in 2002, where the Reds destroyed Leeds 4-0, and Heskey scored two. And the unforgettable game against Roma in the European Cup in 2002, where a strong Emile Heskey caused the Roma defenders all sorts of problems, scored a soaring header, and helped set-up a vital 2-0 victory on Houllier's return after 5 months absence from the club.

However if I remember rightly, it was around the time of our nightmare game against Basel away in the European Cup in November 2002, that we first saw Emile drift out to the left-hand side of midfield. Over the pursuing months, this happened consistently for both Liverpool and England, so much so that he appeared to be spending more of his time on the left hand side than he was up front, supporting Owen. The argument for this was that Emile was a willing runner, who would provide a strong physical presence on the flank – as well as the fact that neither Liverpool nor the national side had anyone else to play there.

Worst of all, he seemed to lose interest. How many times did we see Emile lose the ball up field, only to then slump, shrug his shoulders and shuffle back to the halfway line? Not surprisingly there were calls for him to be dropped, as fans demanded that the lively Baros be given a chance. Instead of attempting to prove his critics wrong, this simply resulted in knocking his already fragile confidence, and so the sorry saga continued.
