Morgan withdraws offer - What next in the saga?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Article from BBC Sport

Tycoon Steve Morgan has abandoned his £70m bid to take control of Liverpool.
His lawyer said in a statement: "Steve has lost patience with the board using his offer as a stopgap while they look for a better one."

The businessman has been trying to invest in the club for several years and made his first official bid in May.

Morgan claims he has been discussing his latest offer with the club for two months but withdrew it after growing tired of their "indecision".

The closest Morgan came to seizing control of Liverpool came in August when a deal was agreed in principle.

It fell through after Morgan carried out business checks on Liverpool's finances which revealed the cost of their proposed new stadium had risen from £80m to £115m.

He consequently told the club's directors: "Please tell the truth about the figures for the stadium. You must come clean about what the costs really are.

"If this room knew half the things from the investigation I undertook they would be appalled, and understand why I revised my offer."

But at the club's AGM at the beginning of December, current chairman David Moores said it "may be time" to accept Morgan's proposal.

At the same meeting, club directors hinted that other offers were being considered and Morgan responded by setting the club a seven-day deadline to make a decision on his bid.

Liverpool failed to respond and on Tuesday, Morgan decided to withdraw his offer.

"Steve is no longer prepared to be used as as stalking horse," said his lawyer.

"He loves the club and desperately wants to take it forward, but he simply can't wait around forever.

"He has other things to do with his life.

"He just hopes for the sake of the fans and the shareholders that the directors urgently secure a deal and get on with it, as it is clear that the club badly needs investment."

Was never cinvinced that this was the best offer available for Liverpool FC in the long-term anyway

I don't think Morgan's been entirely professional in his conduct; choosing to try and air LFC's dirty laundry in public to further his own cause is amateurish

I accept that the true state of the club's finances needed to be discussed, but not in the form of sour grapes from Morgan

I still don't think we've heard the last from him & his bid though. He seems pretty determined

It does however mean we have little or no money for transfers in January, which is only 2 weeks away..  wave goodbye to Anelka and Morientes
Our job is simple, to support the club, not just parts of the club that are easy to support, but every one who plays a part, that includes ALL players.  We are stronger when we are all walking in the same direction. Walk On

Not so fast Ola, the cheese spreading yanks are still very much in the picture. Even if the money isn't actually in LFC's acount by January, the club culd still finance purchases if an investment deal had been formally signed and underwritten

ah .. lets hope so, but do we really want the yanks to have a say in the mighty LFC...

I suppose we aint got much choice now, which is a shame for such a great club.  You woul think we would have people braking the shankley gates down to get in and be a part of this great club

The question is will Liverpool FC sell its soul to the devil in return for success?

Chelsea already has. What do you think?

I just want Moores out of the club and some transfer money
for January.

gettin the yanks involved i dont think wil be equivalent to the Chelsea thing. what he says goes there. the yanks will have influence but Benitez will be doin the team talks, training, and picking the players (and winning the trophies.)
i hate the whole commercial aspect of the modern game so try not to get too involved in debates like "Morgan or The Yanks"  but if i was gonna be objective about it i would have to say "F*ck Morgan Off!!!"   he just looks like a d*ckhead.

I wouldn't be so quick to get rid of Moores. He is a chairman who gives his managers time and whatever money is available to try and improve Liverpool. He loves the club and is not going to sell it down the river just to make a quick few quid...... ever hear the saying better the devil you know??

at the end of the day we need money... and quick.  RB is a supersatr already in my eyes and has turned LFC into a serious attacking side. We just need to score a few more goals and that will come with world class strikers that cost a lot of money that we haven't got at the moment.   OK OK, I know I am stating the obvious, but it could be desperate if we have no money by Jan 30th.. with one day left of the transfer window we may end up with god knows who.....  We need to be in the market for the big boys!!  oo err

even if we dont get investment. that dough from champs league qualification is there to spend. not much, but i bet you we get a few players who we will be happy with, and will help us get into champs league for next season. if we get even 2 of the players bein touted, i'll eat my own toejam if we dont qualify for CL.
