From todays Guardian :
Reds reject Gerrard tie-in for Morientes

The Guardian

Liverpool are to resist Real Madrid's attempts to include a first option on Steven Gerrard in the deal which is ultimately expected to see Fernando Morientes swap Spain for Merseyside.
Negotiations between the two clubs over the transfer of the Spanish international striker are ongoing, with Liverpool's opening bid of £3.5m having been swiftly rejected. Real now intend to push for a deal which would see Morientes as a makeweight to secure a first option on Gerrard should the midfielder leave Anfield, though the Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry will resist when talks resume today.

The club's board will not countenance Gerrard's future being included at any stage of the deal involving Morientes, even if their refusal to consider that possibility effectively ups the price they have to pay for the 28-year-old and prolongs negotiations. Instead they remain confident that a compromise can still be reached with Real before the opening of the transfer window next month.

Typical of the cheek of Real Madrid, every time we do business with that club they try to pi$$ all over us, Parry must dread negotiations with them.

Parry said that Morientes was on the list but not top so I think LFC will tell Real to go suck an egg :;):

That article does not say that Real want to swap, it says they have enquired about first option on Stevie if we buy Morientes.

Sensationalisation by the thread starter me thinks.

I wouldnt give anyone the first option on gerrard for the simple reason that if he does leave we cant then up the price with an auction

It looks to me as though Real Madrid think they can put us over a barrel every time they negotiate with us.
I guess this comes from the past history of the McManaman and Owen transfers, where they found us to be real second raters when it comes to making a deal, they now think they can treat us with disrespect every time we come to the counter.

If we were to fall for the Real Madrid ploy, that's effectively what we would allow them to create by giving them first option on SG.
It would become Morientes plus cash for Gerrard. The cheeky sod's might even try to throw in one or two more failed reserves or tired old pro's as a makeweight, so that they end up spending as little as possible.
They really think that we only capable of buying sweeties at the corner shop.

i wouldn't worry about this piece of news - its just real trying it on. as starbridge says - if we give them first option on gerrard we lose out massively by not having other clubs competing and keeping the price up. the liverpool board aren't stupid enough to let this happen.

Just had a thought, they might even think that they could include the return of MO in a deal with us providing SG and some cash !!  :D   :D

To be fair, our bid of £3.5m probably set the tone for a bit of tit-for-tat on the p*ss-taking front.

I don't blame Real for trying, but I'd like to think we can tie this up for something like £6m, with no strings whatsoever attached. Maybe £7m if they'll take Diao off our hands.
