Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby A.B. » Fri Dec 17, 2004 5:11 pm

Diego Tristan and Victor are both thought to be on the move come January as the transfer window re-opens.

Victor, who was a target for Liverpool over Summer, will be back on the agenda for Rafa Benitez, but with Althletico Madrid and Bayern Munich also in the hunt for the midfielder, it is thought the Reds will have to play hard to get their man.

Diego Tristan is also attracting interest from a variety of clubs throughout Italy and England, though speculation regarding a move to West Brom was swiftly denied by the 28 year old striker.

I'm getting a Deja Vu moment here .
Didn't we have a mgr who kept raiding his national league to buy players , some of you will remember we had the next Zidane etc lined up and ready to take us to the next level.
It's not my intention to try and undermine Rafa's position ,authority or footballing knowledge BUT it seems so far that every potential signing is of spanish origin .
I don't have a problem with that apart from the fact that if we are honest with ourselves the only purchase from spain that has made any impact is Alonso .

I don't see Mourinho looking to bring in a load of Portugese players because he is familiar with their play,language and mentality.

I would hope that Rafa also has the ability and ambition to cast a net that encompasses more than just players from  "La Liga "

Spanish talent is cheap and the players in the Premiership are doing well. i.e. Reyes,Fabregas,Alonso,Garcia. He knows these players very well, he wouldn't buy a player who couldn't play in the Premiership not in January.

i guess he keeps going to la liga becos of shortage in transfer funds. He know that league well and he could get some good players on the cheap.

If we had roman's money, rafa would buy the best players regardless of their nationality.

Diego Tristan is passed it.

I wouldn't be surprised if Cesar of Depor was a target as a replacement for Hyppia.

Look at this way woof woof. Wenger brought French talent that payed off at the end, while Houllier did the same he couldn't get anything out of his French talent.

I think woof makes a good point. Wenger didn't spend all of his money on the French league. Vieira and Kanu came from Italy, Overmars from Holland, and Upson, one of his first signings, down the road from Luton.

Buying almost exclusively from one league is not advisable. Its like when Graeme Souness managed on the continent and brought loads of British player with him.

Thanks for the lesson in economics   :D
I appreciate that Rafa has to work within his budget but La Liga is not the only place where quality players can be bought at a reasonable price .I'm trying to remember how much we paid for Sami Hypia but i'm sure it was a bargain.
Maybe our worldwide scouting system needs beefing up .

Fray Bentos players speak spanish ,and they make great pies.

sarcasm duly noted  :p

But for the sake of argument, players from spanish league are a little more dependable than players from french league. So i am giving rafa the beenfit of doubt here.

Diao, Diouff = Senegalese
both disappointing but not being french don't see how that supports your argument.
Cheyrou =french
just a kid , houllier felt he had real potential and now and again he did show it.

Alonso =spanish
great acquisition,sometimes disappears from the game

Garcia =spanish
has shown the occaisional flash of skill (but so has biscan )

Nunez =spanish
In danger of getting the nickname "numb nuts" , reliable ?On performance so far  I wouldn't trust him to pass me a doughnut.
