Iron gurder - Champions league draw

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby Leonmc0708 » Mon Dec 13, 2004 3:04 pm

Apparently UEFA are running scared of potential crowd problems involving Manchester United and Liverpool in the knockout stages of the Champions League. With the draw set for completion this Friday (17th December 2004).

Both north-west giants finished second in their qualifying groups and with the UEFA seeding (fiddling to you and me) of the draw for hte second round stages, will be paired against Inter Milan, AC Milan, Juventus, Monaco or Bayer Leverkusen when the draw is made in Monte Carlo on Friday.

UEFA's big concern is that both United and Liverpool will be matched with the Milan clubs, thus both being away in the Italian capital, with the possibility that fans of the clubs will find themselves in Italy within the space of 24 hours. This is bacause the games will be played on the Wednesday and Tuesday nights, one after the other.

That raises the possibility of trouble between supporters who have an historical hatred of each other.

A UEFA spokesman said: "We will have to see what the draw brings, but it has already been brought to our attention that there is a potential for security problems where United and Liverpool are concerned."

According to press reports, there are also worries that Liverpool could be drawn to face Juventus. The clubs have not played each other in European competition since 39 Juventus fans died in the Hysel Stadium tragedy at the 1985 European Cup Final.

Websites for the Italian club have been inundated with threats to Liverpool fans prepared to travel to Turin should the clubs be paired together. This could mean yet more trouble for our boys, and I intend to get along to the next game, so it looks a bit hairy for my liking.

Thats cr3p I don't think their needs to be extra security and for us and Man U fans to be treated like hooligans, notice how it's always the british fans who have this label and never the turks who stab fans

Wouldn't go near Turin to be honest with you, Italians are bad enough without a reason

It is kinda depressin to see UEFA pickin out British sides, but thats the unfortunate tag we've developed as a country. It aint just at club level, and maybe the fans should remember that. I aint in a position to travel, so aint too concerned who we get from that point of view, but Liverpool fans must remember we're bein judged as 'British' football fans not Liverpool fans. Lets face it, theres no guarantee that just Liverpool and manure fans are gonna be goin is there.......

Beside the Hillsborough Flame, I heard a Koppite mournin, "Why so many taken on that day?" Justice has never been done. But their memory we'll carry on. There'll be Glory Round The Fields Of Anfield Road

Juve would be horror, they may ban away fans from travelling to both matches - they often do that in Turkey in the big Istanbul derbies between Fenerbahce and Galatasaray.

The major problem that any travelling Liverpool fan will face, going to an Italian side is the over zealous treatment handed out by the fascist police.Believe me,I know from experience, they will treat the fans as objects to try out their new batons...be warned!

Juve may need some traveling support to attend: they only got 7,000 for their last CL fixture!
