That may be true and it also may be a bit of face saving gesture in a situation where we pretty much got the very short end of the stick in that hasty Owen deal

Maybe first refusal thing like with Owen should they let him go, but If my memory serves me correct I dont think hes ours for keeps and they can take him back.
There is no-one anywhere in the world at any stage who is any bigger or any better than this football club.

Er, Owen had a year left on his contract.

8million in cash and a player valued at 5million is a good price to buy a player with a season left.

Get real people, once Owen's contract began to run out we would never get 25m or more for him.

I know the fee is annoying, but had Owen stayed another year he would have left from free.

8million and a 5m player is good business. If Thierry Henry's contract was up in a years time and he wanted to go, his transfer fee would probably be no more than 15million, maybe even as low as 10million.

Owen going on the cheap was not Real taking advantage of us: it was our own fault.

BTW, my understanding was that Benitez wanted Fran, the young Madrid winger but Madrid said "No dice".

I'm not sure if Moreintes was ever in the equation, as it was well publicised earlier in the summer that Moreintes was to return to Madrid in the summer from Monaco and that he had a gentleman's agreement with the Madrid president that he would feature more in the first team.

Madrid and Moreintes both categorically ruled out the player leaving in June 2004, despite strong interest from Arsenal and Chelsea.

Obviously now circumstances have changed but last summer, there was no way Moreintes was leaving Madrid.

Benitez has subsequently said that he was keen on Nunez regardless of the Owen and Fran transfers, but whether thats true or not: who knows?

Benitez has actually said that he tried to get Morientes as part of the deal, also we should have never let Owen get to the situation where he only had one season left on his contract, you thought they (moores and parry) would have learnt from McManaman shafting them but obviously not, thats why we need real businessmen running the club!

You can't judge the guy already, come on...

When Hamann first signed for liverpool it was a similar situation.  He was injured in pre season and when he played his first few games he was s**t, but look how good he has been over the years

Similarly Hyppia was severely shakey in his first half a dozen games until he got used to the premiership.

Players like Bergkamp and Henry also took ages to adapt but have never looked back.

What an utterly useless and pessimistic post this is.  I trust Benitez's judgement on Nunez

I don't think we can really judge Nunez at least for a few months. You have to consider:

-He was hardly ever playing at Real Madrid.

-In fact has hardly played much in his Career

-Coming to a new Country, new League and new Club.

-Suffered injury straight away.

-Not used to the fitness levels required in the Premership.

It will take him some time to overcome these problems fully, so I will reserve my judgement at least until he has played 20 games or so.

contrary to the topic title, I know its late and I've been working all night but I can say that Nunez is quite good in the air for a bloke his size. At least its a start.

I think its a bit early to talk about Nunez, although he looks very tentitive about the way he plays.

Josemi is worrying me however. He looks out of sorts and the pace of the game is a bit quick for him. No time for siestas during the game hombre.

Noticed also that Benitez had a long word to Josemi as they left the pitch. I dont think he's going to be in the starting 11 next season.

Don't get me started Tel on the "its too early" stuff. Not for me to cut a long story short.
Josemi is a funny one. He started really well but seems to have lost his way. The free-kick he gave away in the last minute for the foul on Rivaldo could have been catastrophic. A soft free-kick I know but he shouldn't have even given the referee the opportunity to award it. Hope he comes back though because as I say, he was excellent at first.

I think that's what Rafa said to him (about the free kick conceded in injury time) as the left the pitch as he was on the field for not too long.

We can see that Nunez is not feeling comfortable in his starts but I can see something that can be develope. He will be a good winger soon. He has what Reyes had went through. Though if Garcia comes back, it'll be hard for him to claim back any starts in the team. Trust Rafa to rotate the squad and develope him.

I think Nunez will link up well with Garcia when he gets back into the team
