JBG, fair point on the maths mate. though the post was not an exact science, just an out there prod. Leon, in the third line of your post, you say "you want to sell Gerrard to Chelsea." With the greatest respect, in my post I advised that the first line should be read twice. In your case leon, can you make that three times.  :D
Just to repeat myself, I'm not saying we should sell Gerrard. Can't be any clearer than that can I?

So Leon...

Selling Gerrard isn't an option?

I strongly disagree.

We could get £40million pounds for Steven.

A central midfield of Parker and Alonso would be a hell of a midfield. Instead of having Kewell on the left, we could probably get someone like Duff or Vicente. Thats a massive improvement. Lets face it, Harry's had his chance and not performed.

Then theres the strikers, we could sign someone like Angel or Morientes. Players that are a class above anything we already have in those positions.

You could pick and choose players with that money and if you make the right signings instead of having 2 world class players and 9 decent players, you could 11 top class players.

If we don't sell Gerrard we can improve ONE position this season.

And in the summer we maybe able to make one other big money signing. So we could maybe IF we're LUCKY sign a class forward and a quality centre half. That would still leave us three or four players short.

Where as if we were to sell Gerrard we could sign four or five quality players.

Realistic targets include... Morientes, Angel, Fowler, Beattie, Wright-Phillips, Vicente (maybe Duff), Baraja, Parker, King, Gallas.

If someone offered me Parker, Angel and Vicente for Gerrard i'd snap there hand off.

We should only sell Gerrard when all other options have been tried. If you wan't to move forward, a rule of thumb must bee keep your best players, sell your worst players. Keep Gerrard sell Diao. The worst thing that can happen is sell Gerrard, keep Diao. Only buy players that strenghten the team. We are in an awkward position, Houllier has left a f@ckin mess. I am very happy that we have Benitez since I think he is one of the few men capable of turning us around. Next CL game vs Olympiakos is a massive one. Our hole season rest upon success in that game, since progressing in CL will allow us to sign a quality striker in January. The fans must turn up in numbers and be EXTREMELY VOCAL in that game.
If football is banned in heaven. I'd rather go to hell.

But would it be better than Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso ?

Never in a million years.

*cough* I agree with Leon[yes it's a miracle]. But I understand what Stu is getting at. With the money we could improve other areas on the pitch.

So we are now a selling club?

It sounds like an Everton or Leeds United scenario.

If you think that we should sell our most saleable asset for the good of the team, then that shows how far we have fallen.

I could not ever imagine me old fella talking to his mates down the pub years back discussing selling Dalglish to fund the purchase of a new goalkeeper and a couple of wingers.

Potentially it might not, but Gerrard and Alonso are both leaders in different ways so theres a chance they may clash.

They can both boss games, my worry would be if they were both trying to boss the same game it could work against us.

Also, you aren't looking at the big picture. A midfield of Vicenete, Parker, Alonso and Wright-Phillips looks stronger than Kewell, Gerrard, Alonso and Finnan... quite considerabley infact... then theres the issue of the strike force and defence, with Morientes and King in there as apose to nobody that strengthens them aswell.

Its an 11 man game, as Benitez says, you don't need the best players to have the best team. Great players may win you 1 match, great teams can win you 7 or 8.

Also, look at Yorke and Cole, they were never the greatest individually, Owen was better than both of them by a country mile. But whats Owen achieved compared to them?

you are basing your theory on the ideas of (with the greatest respect) big mick, who to my knowledge has never played or managed football at the very highest level.

It is pie in the sky.

Leon, for fecks sake lad, wheres the money gonna come from?

We need 3 .AT LEAST 10 to 15 million pound players before we're gonna be good enough. Wheres that money gonna come from?

If we don't sell Gerrard... thats at best 1 player every season.

So in 3 years we MIGHT be good enough to win the league... at that point, Hyypia will be gone so theres another replacement making it 4 players, Hamann will have left so he'll need to be replaced aswell.

I don't want Gerrard to go any more than the next person, he's potentially world class but lets be honest, better players than him have left this club and not been missed and no-one is irreplacable, if its for the good of this club then i'm all for it.

Stu the better players that have left the club did so after producing the goods for a good few seasons first.

I would tell you to watch this space on the purchasing of players. David Moores, love or loathe the man has ALWAYS stumped up plenty of cash for all the managers under his tenure.

Do you really think that Rafael Benitez would have left Valencia, where he was well settled and already enjoying GREAT success if he had not received very strong in fact cast iron guarantees that he could do what he wanted, and that he would be backed to the hilt with the required cash.

Lest we forget, Moores has backed Houllier twice with huge sums of money, twice smashing our record transfer fees in Diouf and Heskey, and I bet Moores will have had more than one or two reservations about both of them. If memoy serves, did the same not happen with Souness (Dean Saunders) and Roy Evans (Stan Collymore) and none of these players where exactly straight forward in that they where not top of the pile. But what Moores did was back his managers to the hilt.

I do see the logic, ie funding the purchase of a few players in problem positions, however you simply DO NOT sell your best players, before or at their peak.

Mark my words, I know that £8m has almost been agreed for one striker already, and the gaffer is still looking for two other top class players.

Reason why Benitez left Valenica is because Valencia promised him money for the transfer market but at the end he recieved nothing. We have more money imo more than some say. How the hell can we have the same amount of money available to be spended in January as Everton[that being 10 million pounds]?

He never left cus of that, if so how come there was a lot of messing in getting him in, he left to come to us.

Mark my words, we will spend in excess of £10m in the january transfer window.
