What happened to players returning from loan ?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby woof woof ! » Wed Dec 18, 2024 2:35 pm

Was thinking about players with "promise" that have gone out on loan, essentially to give them more game time and experience. However I then found myself struggling to name a player who has gone out on a loan and has subsequently returned to have a successful career at LFC.
With a player like Ben Doak  in mind, although apparently thriving in his current loan spell would not he and the club have been better served if he'd remained with us ? Surely there would have been opportunities to give him game time (e.g.tonight against Southampton ?)

But back to my initial point  :p , can anyone remind me of a player we've sent out on loan who has returned and gone on to have a successful career with us ?

I think another valid  question would be how many other players from other clubs have gone out on loan and come back to their original club and gone on to star? It’s a question of whether loans help or merely an easy way to get rid of a player by keeping him in the shop window. I’m sure players have gone on to bigger things after a loan spell but I’d bet not many.

As for Ben Doak, had Salah not been a Liverpool player I can see him having got more minutes. Problem is not only is Salah a star, he wants to play every minute and throws a strop when he doesn’t.

I suspect sending them out on loan is more about getting 12 months first team experience elsewhere to raise their value, ie putting them in the shop window.
I hope that Doak is the odd exception and will come back and be the real thing.

A loan to a club will be mainly to see how the player is at a higher level than U21’s

And 9/10 most show that they will prob not make it at the top level but more than good enough for lower prem clubs or championship etc

The really talented ones get the breakthrough at the club - ie Trent etc

Jaydan Danns has signed a long term LFC contract and gone out on loan to Sunderland until the end of the season.

Stefan Bajcetic has switched loan club mid-season. Spain Under-21 defensive midfielder cuts short loan spell at Red Bull Salzburg to seal La Liga switch to Las Palmas.

Ben Doak continues to impress at Middlesborough.
