Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby JBG » Fri Jan 02, 2004 1:36 pm

There was a lot of news in the papers today about Liverpool:

1. Dbjril Cisse says that he and Guy Roux have had advanced talks with Liverpool and if he leaves Auxerre in the summer it will be to Anfield and not to Man UTD. He says that he will move to Anfield irrepsective of whether Houllier is manager.

2. Guesppe Favalli, Lazio's Italian international defender, says that he wants a move to Liverpool on a Bosman in the summer. He says that he wants a move to England and Liverpool are his preferred destination.

3. Neil Mellor will probably return to Liverpool from West Ham as he is unable to get into the West Ham first 11 and Houllier has said that he's prefer Mellor to play in Liverpool's reserves than in West Ham's. Things are looking bad for young Mellor now....

4. Abel Xavier has been released by Galatassary and will return to Liverpool to train while he looks for a new club. It appears that he is still technically a Liverpool player as he went to Galatassary on loan with an option to sign permanently but the Turks didn't take up that option. Houllier hasn't ruled Xavier out of a recall to the Liverpool first team but says that it is extremely unlikely.

I reckon the Favalli story is nothing more than newspaper speculation, but the Cisse comments are very encouraging, although the downside is that our last couple of signings from France have been disasters.

I think Neil Mellor is finished at Anfield.....he'll go the way of Jon Newby or Richie Partridge.

Xavier back at Anfield...argh!!!!

Also, Howard Wilkinson reckons that Gerard Houllier will survive the crisis at Anfield and believes that 2004 will be a very good year for the Pool!

What do people think?

That sound's very good to me, i watched it this morning on a football program that Djibril Cisse still want's to come, Pongolle also said that he spoke to Cisse and he told him the same thing so that's three different perpective's of the story now, all we can do is wait and see now and hopefully these elegation's are true!

Im not convinced on the Gueseppe Favalli story although i would welcome him to Anfield, if he does come were do you think he would play or do you think Houllier would play him in his natural position?

As for Mellor and Xavier, they are simply not good enough for us. When Mellor first hit the show there was speculation that he was going to be the next Gerrard but from the minute i saw him i just thought average, maybe even below average. He wasted chance's that reminded me of Heskey, he just did'nt do enough in my opinion!

Let's just wait and see with Houllier, if he can pull us out of this one and stay manager i will take my hat off to him.

Unfortunately mate Wilko must be one of the most disliked, discredited plums in the game.......

As far as the rumours go, there is nothing there to excite. I'm not sure about Cisse, will we be spending a further 10mill on yet another flop....? I'd rather we went for someone like pie-boy Viduka or Alan Smith.

Does anyone know the lowdown on Richie Partridge, he got some rave reviews playing wide on the left on loan at Cov last season....?

2nd rate has-been italians, shiiite white-bearded Portuguese or out-of-shape young strikers are of no consequence......

I've only seen Cisse play for France once ... it was when they tore Egypt a new a#se .... and Cisse was brilliant ... but it was Egypt !!!

Interesting that his statement on joining LFC included a line about "regardless of Houliers position" (or something to that effect). Looks like everyone is prepared for the departure of Inspector Clouseau

Cisse may be a far better goalscoring prospect than that inept "tumbleman" Diouf but he is still untested as far as the premiership and English football is concerned and perhaps the hype surrounding him is a bit too much making his asking price a gamble. Alan Smith or Mark Viduka are more suitable in my opinion. At least Viduka has a better first touch than Heskey and can be a better foil for Owen.
As for Wilko, his tactical abilities are just slightly better than Inspector Clouseau and he was a lucky winner of the old first division championship with Leeds because Man U threw away the title that year and a certain Eric Cantona inspired them to the title. Shortly after, he sold Cantona for a song to United who in turn, inspired them to the title! He is a poor judge of character and a poorer coach so his predictions should only be logical to people under the influence of alchol....
I don't know about the Italian defender but the top man is Nesta.

Well i think Cisse would definitely be the way to go.

Viduka would be ok but only ok in my opinion, i just can't see him fitting into our team some how for some reason and Alan Smith is just out of the question. He would have more booking's than goal's i think and would probably be suspended so much that he would'nt benifit the team much anyway, one quality i do like about him though is the way he play's with that hunger our team lack's in so much this season.

RedSi i seen Partridge play a couple of time's for Coventry and i must say that he excited me, even more so when i realised who he was. I actually thought to myself how in the hell is he not getting first team football for Liverpool. I think it was the goal against Watford that caught my eye, it was like something you would see Ginola or Rinaldo doing, he beat almost the whole team from just inside his own half before smacking a shot from about 25 - 30yrd's that flew into the top corner like a rocket. The only thing i'm thinking about with Partridge is he could be one of these First division only player's, you know the like's of Darren Huckerby, i suppose time will tell in this case but it could be a long time before he get's a run out in our team in a Premiership match!

I'm from Ireland and there's a lot of talk about Partridge over here ... I've never sen him play but have read reviews and know he did really well with Coventry (Gary Mac obviously spotted him while he was with us and thought "I'll have a bit of that") .... despite not actually seeing him play , I can't understand why he would not get a run in the first squad when we continue to play Smicer et al ... for f##ks sake , he can't do any worse !!!!
