Igor - Is he a legend in the making?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I'm pleased for Igor.  He looks a different player doesn't he?  Still a way to go yet, but the difference in his play is remarkable.

When the time comes, I think we should offer him a new contract.  What can we lose?

Remember Edu's start at Arsenal?

He had awful problems to start with and looked completely out of his depth in his first two years there yet last season he turned out to be one of the best midfielders in England.

I still think a lot of what has been said is a bit premature and I think that its symptomatic of modern football that people can feel sorry for a guy who cost the club over 6m in transfer fees and undoubedtly earns more than 20g a week.

Igor must take an awful lot of the blame (and not just Houllier) of his abysmal previous Liverpool career, although if he maintains and KEEPS his current improvement then I may forgive him for the last 3 years or so.

I'm shocked maybe houllier knew who to buy, just not how to coach

JBG i think you're a bit harsh on Igor.

is there no part of you that can see that he was never a right winger or centre back. is it just pure coincidence that as soon as gets games in centre mid he's proving to be worth the reputation he came with 3 years ago?

remember his first few games? he looked the part. then what happened ( well we all know ).
its not the chilli sauce on kebabs that give you ring-sting, its the actual meat. had one without chilli, and still had ring-sting. the chilli's only there to mask the nonsense they stuff inside that bread.

Ironically though Jim, you could say the same about Diouf, who was never particularly effective on the wing, but wasn't fortunate enough to get his chance up front, which is the position he was signed for.

I don't think its harsh to critice footballers who hugely have underperformed despite costing millions in transfer fees and wages.

Igor is an adult and he gets paid a hell of a lot of money to do his job, and up to now, he hasn't done it.

Its true that he was playe out of position a lot by Houllier, but given his wages, I'd expect a bit more flexibility out of him. It wasn't as if he was asked to play in goal or lead the line up front.

Also, I think people are looking at Igor's past with rose tinted glasses: Igor wasn't all that hot when he arrived at Anfield in late 2000 despite being played in central midfield.

Don't get me wrong, I am very happy that Igor is improving this season, but its long over due: its taken him almost 4 years to make his mark and if he were in any other profession he'd be long out of a job.

I'll get roasted here again for harking back to the past but pre-Sky TV days footballers that came to this club got on with the job. Gary Gillespie and Gary Ablett were not the most gifted of footballers, nor was Barry Venison, and they were rotated all around the pitch but they got on with the job and didn't complain.

I also distinctly remember Igor having a nickname on this forum last season called "trashcan". The way I see it Igor was abysmal for 4 solid years here and he owes the club and the fans a huge improvement, which, at least, he is beginning to show.

Back on Diouf for a sec - I think he's floated out to the right for some international matches, but generally he's up front partnering that Niang fella.

When I first saw Diouff play for Senegal he played a similar role to Henry: a forward that drifts wide to the left a lot. I think thats his perferred position.

I heard his preferred position is a pillow biter.
Smith to Shankly:My thigh is a bit sore, but I think I could play.
Shankly to Fagan:Tell him,Joe.He has got no chance of playing.
Smith to Fagan:Tell him to sod off.It is not his leg,it's mine.
Shankly to Smith:Oh no son.You are wrong, son. It is not your leg.
It is Liverpool Football Club's leg.
