2. I will keep Smicer and Diouff to see if Benitez can treat them better, so at least they will be resaleable at a higher price.

3. Players to sell ONLY IF the replacements exist already:
- Hamann
- Henchoz

4. I have no clear idea about Cheyrou, if he's wanted for a reasonable price, he can go, but if not, perhaps we have to wait and see.

5. The rests out of JBG's list should go asap.

That's my tohughts exaclty!

Hamman has been a very good servant to Liverpool but you have to ask yourself, will I win a premiership with him as a first choice midfielder?

The arrival of a quality midfielder (we've been linked to Rossicky, Hargreaves, Aimar and Davids) could be the time to let Didi return to Germany as he has said he would like to.

Dudek and Henchoz should only be sold if we have a replacement lined up as anfieldorer said.

Diouff has been mistreated by GH and so I think Rafa should give him a chance.

If Owen refuses to sign a contract and leaves, I think that instead of buying another striker we should consider using Diouff up front again, at least as a reserve to Baros and Cisse.

Its interesting how things have turned out since I posted this thread.

Gerrard stayed, Owen left, and who back then knew much about Alonso, Garcia, Nunez and Josemi?

Funnier still, Troare would improve and become a first team player and Biscan has slowly developed a strange cult status!

Yep, it was a strange sequence of events. It's not so rosy right now, mainly from injuries, but I think Rafa is moving us in the next direction, I can seriously see us as title contenders next season...

I certainly hope so.

Unfortunately I think our form will continue to be patchy until January but I think that with players returning from injury and probably one or two buys in January the new ideas and methods will start to bed in and we'll really start improving.

I think there is potential for a well organised side to upset the top three next year and be genuine contenders, and I think Benitez's Liverpool could well be that side.

I'll always be sad we let Owen go, but our squad has benefitted a lot from the summer. We still have some way to go, but now Benitez has time to see what he's been dealt I fully expect he'll continue to build a solid squad in January and next summer, as long as the cash is available...

John Barnes' Granny wrote:We were told back in the spring that Gerard Houllier was to oversee a mass exodus of players in the summer, with the likes of Heskey, Diouff, Diao, Dudek and Hamman leading the way.

Heskey has gone, and (to his own surprise) Houllier has followed him.

Should Benetiz pick up where Houllier started and begin a clearout of our squad?

Some members here raised the valid point that Benetiz should stick with the current squad for a season before making any major changes. However, that was based on the premise that we had the nucleus of a good team, and with a new manager and a few key signings, the tide would turn for us.

However, if the rumours are true and Gerrard jumps ship, what are we left with?

Personally, I believe that we need a far smaller and more efficient first team squad, and I think Benetiz should be given carte blanche to do what he pleases. I honestly think that the time is now ripe to clear out 8 to 10 players and start rebuilding immediately.

My candidates are:

Jerzy Dudek: not the worst keeper around, but I have lost faith that he will recover his 2002 form. PSV are interested, and Dudek is highly rated on the continent.

Gregary Vignal: Espanyol would probably take him off us.

Djimi Traore: we should recover our money by selling him to the likes of West Brom.

Stephan Henchoz: once the best defender at the club, but he has lost his pace and is injury prone, and in my view he should be let go.

Marcus Babbel: realistically he will never recapture his old form and its pointless having him around. Let him return on a free to Germany.

Didi Hamman: getting old and is increasingly one dimensional. Could still catch 2 or 3 million in a transfer fee.

Vladmir Smicer: also getting old, and his goal against Holland would probably be enough to secure a move to Turkey or Greece.

Igor Biscan: a poor player but who would take him? Our best option would probably be to loan him out abroad.

Bruno Cheyrou: Marseille are interested and IMO its time to cut our losses.

Salif Diao: would have left had Houllier satyed. Cannot see him improving. Cut our losses by selling him cheaply on the continent.

El Hadji Diouff: misfit. We would have to take the pain of letting him go on the cheap.

Neil Mellor: won't be a top striker and he'll probably be a division 2 player in three years time.

Obviously we would be lucky to shift half of these, but surgery needs to be carried out on the squad and three or four good signings to replace the lot of them would be enough.

i recon dudek is a far better keeper than kirkland !!
liverpools form when kirkland is in goal is abismal!!
otherwise i agree with the rest !!

When you get the ball, I want you to beat a couple of men and smash the ball into the net, just the same way you used to at Bury," said Shankly. Lindsay replied: "But Boss that wasn't me, it was Bobby Kerr." Shankly turned to Bob Paisley and said: "Christ Bob, we've signed the wrong player."

We won, don't feel like posting too much than that lol. Seriously, Josemi was quite poor today, he ****** me off. The way he was outrunned, he was out of position at times, just a big disapointment.
