LUCAS LEIVA - OFFICIAL THREAD

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

I like Lucas. He's commited. He's loyal. He's a good player who is entitled to wear our shirt. I'd not sell him.

I'd not be completely uncritical of him though. The number of fouls are bad enough. He's slow, and despite what some think, he's not a perfect DM (yes Stu, DM, as in a CM who prefers D to A.).

With a striker it's easy to judge him. Is he in the right places? Does he put the ball in the net? Midfielders are different.

I've said it before in another thread: a good DM will make important tackles. A great DM will make more interceptions. The perfect DM will control the game, albeit subtly, by reading the game, controlling it. Seeing danger long before it happens. Avoiding danger by keeping the ball. He'll be a cool customer, knocking the passes around, intimidating his opposite number with his aggression and grace.

The perfect DM is rare. Lucas isn't great. He's good. And he'll do. But we could surely upgrade, or at least squeeze more out of Lucas by providing competition to his place.

if you were to sum up lucas's career so far with us you would have to call it average. he is nothing special.
one season where the side was very poor he stood out, then he missed the guts of a season through injury which in fairness was a bad one and to lucas's credit he was never a player who consistently picked up injury's. he has been fit a while now and most on here seem to think he will get back to his best but in truth that was never good enough anyway.
i recognise the effort, commitment and desire he has to play for us and i wish more would have his attitude but it doesnt disguise his biggest flaw in that he is average.
if we are looking to improve the 1st team then its definately a position that needs a better quality player. he's been here 6 maybe 7 years now and maybe next summer is the time to move him on.

But why does he keep getting in the side? No doubt he'll be in the starting line up tonight.
He's a liability. He's past his sell by date, and we need a change. Maybe even play Sterling there instead as an attacking midfielder, with Gerrard holding.
But definately not Joe Allen.

Hehe. You mean play Gerrard there instead of Lucas then. You don't need to move Sterling in so Gerrard can swap with Sterling. Just swap Stevie with Lucas and save on mouse clicks :)

Both Gerrard and Lucas sit as a pair - neither really burst forward - that normally comes from Henderson

Sterling is an out and out winger. Needs to learn that before he is "moved" anywhere

Wee are away from home tonight against a decent enough footy side. So i think its only right that he starts. If you put Stevie in there it would completely disrupt the system, we need Stevie's vision in the deep position to unlock teams with his passing range. Unless we use the young  kid Ilori as a DM. I haven't seen him play but by all accounts he can play there. there really isn't any other options.

Ilori has 't even kicked a ball for us yet, and you want to play him away from home, against the bosses former club, in a grudge match..
Eh. No, Ted :)

Never said that. Just pointing out the options that are available to the manager. Maybe you should read it again.

Lucas is our only option in the role he plays - Ilori is rumoured to be a very good DM as well as CB so could possibly see him there in the future

Take him out of the side and you will all be calling for him to come back in. He does a thankless job in there and is a big part of the reason we have not shipped a goal yet this season (and only 1 in pre season).
