Cisse out for the season

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby A.B. » Sun Oct 31, 2004 2:42 am

"  Djibril Cisse is unlikely to play again this season after suffering a broken leg during Saturday's 2-2 draw at Blackburn.
The French striker was taken to hospital in Blackburn where X-Rays revealed the extent of the injury.

Liverpool FC Head of Press Ian Cotton said: "Our club doctor Mark Waller has confirmed that Djibril Cisse suffered a comminuted fracture of the tibia and fracture of the fibula in his left leg.

"Djibril will undergo surgery on Sunday morning to insert a pin in the tibia. Unfortunately he is unlikely to play again this season and everybody at the club wishes him the speediest of recoveries."
------------------------------------------------------------

Cisse picked up a very nasty injury, it wasn't a harsh tackle by the Blackburn lad but the way Cisse fell and broke his leg was gutting. I wish him a speedy recovery. I feel sorry for the lad because he can not prove that he is worth 14 million pounds until next season and Baros will have to start from scratch as far as linking up with striker goes. Djibril didn't score much but he looked promising, it is really too bad that he will be out for the season. Good luck to Cisse with the surgery on Sunday and with his recovery.

Another injury was the last thing we needed after starting to play very well in the past three games. I did not expect another broken Red leg against Blackburn, just when things start to go our way a huge obsticle is thrown our way. We face yet another test come this Wednesday against Deportivo.

We have two strikers left, Baros and Mellor. Baros has worked really hard in the last few games and is starting to bang in the goals. But I honestly can not see Rafa giving Mellor a chance. I haven't see him play but from what I read I understand that Mellor is too poor for our standards. Playing Mellor is out of the question, can we really take a risk by playing him in the Premiership and in the Champions League?

Most likely Luis Garcia will be played up front along with Baros. As far as midfield is concerned Finnan should be played in midfield. Josemi hasn't looked impressive so for the time being maybe Finnan should take Josemi's place. Hyypia is also a huge concern but who do we replace the big Sami with? He has given the ball away too much recently and today we payed the price for it. He made a horrible pass which led to a goal and also Carragher and Josemi didn't clear the damn ball from the box.

We are all extremely worried since Cisse is done for the season but the midfield has been chipping in a lot of goals lately so we can score without Cisse. Gerrard will be back soon so our midfield can only get better.

I wasn't certain if Rafa was going to buy another striker but after what happened today he will have to because 3 strikers is not good enough when it comes down to injuries. We need a class striker. Mista is out of the question now and I do not know about the Morientes situation because he said that he would like to play for us and Monaco, so who knows who we will end up signing.

We shouldn't let this damper our spirits. The joy that we were filled with after the Reds came back from 2-0 to win the game shouldn't be blown away. The lads have been playing some good football in these recent weeks after the Fulham victory so we can only hope that we continue to play well even without Cisse.

Gerrard and Nunez will return within two weeks. Which leaves Cisse and Smicer.

EDIT]-And of course Pongolle.

I agree with greenred.

Greenred also posted about Jim Beglin before I wanted to say the same. Beglin was a very promising left-back, who immediately displaced Alan Kennedy after Kenny became player-manager and if I am not mistaken, he also made a breakthrough into the Rep Ireland team. The broken leg sustained after a tackle by Gary Stevens ended Beglin's career in the top flight.

Cisse relies more on pace, sudden acceleration and deceleration and change of direction than Beglin as he is a striker. The reality of it is that this injury may well compromise his career in the future.

Rock, the worrying thing is that he has so far been so one-dimensional, that he relies on raw pace alone and displays little other things in his arsenal to suggest that he can coppensate for a potential lack of pace.

Alan Shearer used to have it all - pace, power, strength, good header and thunderous and accurate shot. Then he had ankle injury problems due to teking stress on sudden bursts of acceleration and deceleration and having to support violent change of upper body directions when twisting/jinking during running. He had surgery (or a few) and as a result he lost his explosive pace but he had other qualities to compensate and adjusted his game and still kept banging in those goals.

Cisse appears to more limited in his attributes. I fear that it is 14 million down the drain as if he loses his turbo speed, I fear he can't compensate enough to bang in the goals in the Premiership. perhaps in a less physical league?

There goes 14 million...

Well how what sort of player Cisse will be when he returns is a problem which we will  have to worry about next season. The more pressing problem is who will replace him as our forward options are becoming very bare. Ironic Pongelle was talking about moving due to lack of 1st team opportunties. Also as i said in a previous thread i bet a new striker wont come cheap as we arent going to be in a good bargaining position when transfer window opens again.

bloody hell, every time we play at Ewood park we get major injuries.

Really bad news this is, cos we are going to be severely limited up front until January, and we may never see Cisse play to his potential while at the club. Could be 14 million down the drain (not Cisse's Fault)  :(
