Liverpool face Notts County in the League Cup Second Round
August 8, 2013
Liverpool have been drawn to play Notts County in the second round of the Capital One Cup (League Cup) at Anfield.

Ties will be played the week commencing August 26th and there’s a high chance the Liverpool game will be shown live on TV. Confirmation of this will follow.

The Reds were seeded in the draw that took place at 12.30pm on Thursday afternoon, and didn’t include any teams who have qualified for European competitions this season.

Liverpool last won the competition in 2012, when Kenny Dalglish’s Reds defeated Cardiff City on penalties at Wembley in the final.

As we don't have any Europa league this year we should really be trying for some domestic success. Obviously FA cup as well.

Dangerous ground - look what happened to the last manager who did that. The owners showed their feelings of domestic trophies

the domestic cups are a lifeline to europe and we cannot afford to treat these with contempt. we have to get back to european competition next season and we might not be guaranteed that if we finish 6th.
the final is in february and it would be great to have a trophy in the bag and el qualification sorted and then we can focus on the last 3 months on getting our a$$es in to that 4th spot.
realistically we have a good chance of winning this and i hope we do  :nod

But remember what happened to the last manager to take the domestic cups seriously ? Got sacked because didnt get CL football - remember Tom Werner and Ian Ayres statement back then about the importance of the 4th spot.

In the past our club has an illustrious history in regards the domestic cups - my first trip to Anfield South was a Milk Cup final - wonderful memories, same with my trips last season - until they were tarnished by our own owners

I say we go for the cups or at least one of them. We'll be in the Europa League then and if we win it we'll qualify for the CL. Winning the EL will be easier than coming 4th.

Always try to win as many trophies as we can - never treat the domestic cups with any disdain. Rafa learned that lesson in his first season - hopefully BR learned that

He parted company because he didnt get 4th place. The owners dismissed the domestic cups when stating even if we had won the FA cup Kenny still would have been sacked because we didnt get 4th. Now obviously 12 months later the owners changed the line in the sand to suit their needs and mediocrity became acceptable for certain fans. Kenny prioritised the cups so that we would have success ( success that certain fans enjoyed then demanded the sacking of the man that helped get it ) and because he did that the league form suffered.

Exactly which part isn't black and white - would you like to read the owners statement about the FA Cup and importance of 4th spot just after they sacked Kenny

Can we stick to the thread subject please.

You said everything wasn't black and white about Kenny being sacked - so which parts have I missed . Here is part of the statement from Ayre

Ayre admitted that Dalglish would have been dismissed even if he had delivered Liverpool the FA Cup, because the club cannot afford the continued loss of Champions League revenue which is allowing other clubs to power ahead of them financially. In a clear break with the club's past, Ayre said cup success was no longer enough to sustain the club in the modern era.

"The Carling Cup and the FA Cup don't generate the revenue and the success that is needed to keep investing," Ayre said. "If you want to be successful, you have got to keep investing. People don't want to hear that football is a business. They don't. They want to see us put lots and lots of money into the football team and win lots of trophies and games. But you have got to have both. You have got to have continued progress in the league. If you don't do well in the league and you don't get into the Champions League, you are writing cheques from your own pocket, aren't you? That is not a sustainable way, going forward."
