Kolo Toure

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

For me, Kolo Toure is a good signing.

Like Carra, he is a leader and knows how to organize a backline well. Plus he has very good powers of recovery and would add the much needed physicality that has been missing in our backline. Is he as good as Carra in the mental aspects of being a central defender? No but few are. Where he will be an asset is that he is physically more capable.

Skrtel didn't live up to his potential... too error prone and is too much of a confidence player. When things are going well and he strings a series of matches together where he performs well, he generally manages to get things going. But a few errors here and there and his confidence gets torn to shreds.

Much rather have a Toure and Agger partnership than an Agger Skrtel partnership.

Is Kolo the solution? No, he is not the long term solution but rather a stop gap and in the future, a good backup to have... Plus we are an extremely young side minus Gerrard and some experience is required especially in the back.

Could we and should we have done better in the CB situation as far as market purchase go? Yes definitely but Kolo's no slouch, IMO.

When did you last see Toure play to anything like you suggest though ? Before his drugs ban ? Whilst at Arsenal ?

He is experienced but has been a shadow of himself in the last 2/3 years but he is cheap

I would prefer to start with either Wisdons or Kelly

I agree that he is a good signing, but at Arsenal he was never the one organizing the backline. He was not the most disciplined of defenders. Havent seen him play much for City, but I dont think he did that there either. What he does bring is a ton of experience and he is (or at least was) a solid defender. He has lost a lot of pace, but is better at reading the game. Overall a good squad player that can pass on some of his experience to our younger players.

i guess we wont know how good a signing he is until we see him up against the van persie`s, aguero`s, rooney`s, lukaku`s, benteke`s etc.
thats when we`ll find how much he`s got left in the tank.

Great reader of the game that's for sure. Looks like he still has it. I was pleasantly surprised by his performance, but I still think we'll need a better defender to sort out our defending problems.

Very good performance, even showed off some attacking flair that Carragher lacked.

Still a concern having a 32 yr old cb though, will he be able to cope with the whole season.

he had a really good game today and again unlucky not to score. love the shapes he throws and it proves he wants to make a good go of it here. he provides a real threat from set pieces and is an upgrade on carra. he definately has more than a season left in him at this level.
only criticism i have of him is his tendency to wander and it will cost us against better sides.
overall good positive feeling about the 3 new boys today.

I've never rated Toure and since his big money move from Arsenal to ManCity he has done nothing to prove he's anywhere near a top defender in this league. His biggest attribute defensively was his recovery ability. Never been the best aerially, never been the best at reading plays and I dont even see him as someone who would organize a defensive line well despite his experience (Carra, Rio, Carvalho..etc) .. He has lost his pace, and more often than not he'll struggles against forwards with pace or ones who are good in the air.

We should have made signing a CB a priority imo. However, if it turns out to be the case that we go into the season with what we have, then I'd much rather see Skrtel lineup alongside Agger than Kolo Toure or Wisdom.

I think we can safely say that this post is way wide of the mark.

If Kolo carries the form he showed against Stoke yesterday it will be safe to say it will be one of the shrewdest signings this season.

Contrary to the hyperbole that he's lost his pace, we can now put this MYTH to bed.

Contrary to the negative belief he doesn't have aerial ability, he looked our most dangerous threat from corners and dealt with everything thrown at him by Stoke, we can put that down as another MYTH.

And "despite his experience" he led the back four well and looked as though he had been back there for years.
