The possiblity of bigger tournaments like the one suggested is likely because of the amount of money that can be offered - thats why the CL was started from the European Cup - it was to stop a European Super League being formed and it has allowed vast amounts of money to be generated for the clubs.

At some stage in the future there will be a competition where it will be just the top clubs in Europe playing each other on a weekly basis in a league backed by vast amounts of money. The CL will expand further and become the main comp

Doubt it. Match tickets are expensive enough as they are. Do you really think fans are going to afford to fly across Europe on a regular basis? If everywhere was priced around the same level as in Germany maybe but it's gotten stupid now so I can never see this format working.

Good point but, maybe they'd just reduce the away fan allocation to a bare minimum and the extra seats available would be taken up by home fans ?

For example I don't think Liverpool would have a problem selling a few thousand extra seats for a home game against any top European side

My gut feeling is that a breakaway European League wouldn’t be quite as successful as the domestic leagues + champions league. I just don’t think you can replace regional rivalries.

And on the original thread, I’m in the NO camp. The planning, trying and scheming to get to the top is half the fun. I think it would be quite boring if we starting splashing the case like City and PSG.

Nice to see the majority agree.

Totally agree. Trying to buy instant success in any sport is just not sport.

This is from Al Jazeera Sports, which is owned by the Qatari Royal Family, the same owners as Ooredoo.

The link below is in Arabic but has quotes from a director in the company which I translated below.

"The goal was to sponsor a big English club with a huge history, our search included Arsenal & Manchester United but the former two have long sponsorship deals and the same applies to Manchester City so Liverpool is the only club available right now."

"We want to sponsor the club in full. We want to sponsor the Stadium (possibly rename it) as well as the club's kits. Our goal is to reach the Asian markets where the Premier League has an enormous fan base."

"We received the tender from the club a few days ago and we are currently in the process of due diligence and we are studying each aspect of the study."

"It is a dual interest, Liverpool needs the money to compete with the European heavyweights and we want to expand our brand to reach new markets via football."

John Henry said selling naming rights to the stadium is not part of the stadium plans but if someone came in with a big offer I don’t think we’d refuse. And too be honest there seems to be less resistance to the idea from match goers than there was a couple of years ago.
"We’ve got a lot of Cockneys in the team, but really, it doesn’t matter where they’re from – we’re all playing for Liverpool.” Robbie Fowler

Just saw that story pop up today

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/footba ... redoo.html

Money is no guarantee for success & we could be stuck with Ooredoo-Field Stadium, selling part of our history to finish in the top 4 who knows how many times.

I'm not sold on the idea just yet...

I don't think it will be a full rename - Anfield will still be in the name

But the money would come in very good use for us.

by the sounds of it they`ve distanced themselves from those press reports linking them with us, saying they were well wide of the mark.
