Getting Used to Being Average

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Reg » Mon Jan 28, 2013 5:33 am wrote:As a long standing fan having enjoyed the success and squirming in our bleaker moments, it's hard to face that apart from a few isolated seasons we haven't improved our football in the last 20 seasons. Twenty years is an almighty period of time, many of today's fans weren't even born during the golden days, never mind remember them.

The last 3 seasons of Rafa leaving, Hodgeson bringing in no-hopers, Kenny making some high profile silly purchases then BR sweeping them all away and focusing on young talent moving straight into the first team without a bedding in process, I have to come to terms with our club being well and truely downsized to mid-table status.

Our record against the top 10 this season and being unable to turn a game around against Oldham are just the lastest examples of how far we've fallen. We're trying to rebuild from Ground Zero.

My long term Liverpool fan colleagues are of the same opinion, not only are we off our perch but there seems little chance of getting even halfway up within the next 5-10 years as we focus investment on rebuilding Anfield. At best we're a business that's going to bimble along simply because of a fiercely loyal client base, not because our actual product is any good.

I find it very difficult to get excited by LFC these days, not only do we not have the player base but we bring in distinctly average players and put them straight into the first team.

Bottom line is our global fan base will decline - its inevitable without success and this further reduced income will only hinder our investment yet again.

That loss against Oldham was more than a football result, it was a massive indicator of where our club is these days.

we play gooner tmr n they are just 3 points ahead of us. spurs is way above us in the leauge and still got whacked by leeds.
i have faith in this squad just not so much in coates, jones and skertel.

Bam, I'm not a drama queen, I'm an ex-Happy-Clappy who's taken off the rose tinted specs and can see the club what it is.

Some people prefer to live in La-la Land and don't see the wider implications of having a team of new-buy youngsters without wondering what happened to everything Rafa and the Academy was building towards over the last 5 years and the implied wasting of further millions of pounds but thats becuase they're only interested in the result, not the club.

Like I said, fan blind loyalty keeps LFC in business, not value for money or the quality of the product.

I see your point Reginald
As someone who saw the teams of the late 60s, 70s, 80s etc I felt that I was truly blessed to have been born a Liverpool fan. I honestly mean that. I would say to my everton friends that I couldnt believe how they supported such a sh'ite team, and why they werent Liverpudlians was literally beyond my comprehension.
I used to pity them, such was my arrogance and superiority due to the total dominance my team had over not just this country, but the whole of Europe. I thought those days would last forever, after all, what could go wrong? Everything was in place and the assembly line would just keep producing great footballers who loved us as much as we loved them. Even when we began the decline after KK left and Souness took over I saw it as a blip and we would reclaim our place at the top. Wenger, purple nose, chelsea and now man city could all have their brief time but we would come back better than ever. The sleeping giant would awaken and crush these pretenders. At the moment this is not happening, but I am not stupid, or blind, or, as my bitter friends keep saying, "deluded". I know our weaknesses and how much we have fallen, especially in comparison to past accomplishments. We are inconsistent without doubt and are where we deserve to be in the league, no question. And the future is uncertain because of many aspects, not least the managers seemingly strange selections and the owners policy on transfers. But...
Dont forget that even in these dark times we have won, amongst other things, an FA cup, a Eufa cup, League cups, and a Champions League trophy since 2001. As bad as it might seem the only thing we havent won is the Premier League.I  believe we are not that far away from being a team that can challenge for the title. I Dont believe the hype that we are a million miles away, a couple of years maybe, but not a million miles. We have put some good and even great performances in this season. What we lack is belief, confidence and unity which leads to understanding and passion. We have a good manager, good players and fantastic supporters and although we can argue all day about the owners, I believe they will come good in the end.
I am an optimist and although Im gutted over the FA cup fiasco I think we can turn it round and make some headway in the league this season.
This is only the beginning of a new era...

What concerns me is that Suarez will most likely be leaving in the summer because of no CL football. He is the fulcrum of the side esp. in attack. He has improved so much compare to last season such that every time he's in the box with half a chance, BANG! the ball is at the back of the net. Without him next season, will be a great loss. IMO, the only silver lining is we can start a bidding war for him and hope we get 60M for him and use that sum to buy 2 to 3 quality players in midfield and attack. He did us a great favour last summer in signing a long term contract whether he leaves or not at the end of the season.

I'm not sure our scouts are good enough to replace Suarez.   Maybe we'll move Downing up the field...

Even if we do get £60 million for Suarez we'll p!ss it away buying half the Swansea team and various other average players. I just have no confidence in us challenging for the premiership until we have new generous owners and a much better management structure, including new CEO and DOF.

Good to see nothing changes - "new generous owners" - i think the spend so far is just over £150 mil in two years.

Currently we are on the same amount of points and games won as we did in Rafas first season with us - makes you think a little.
