Our points total has dropped for the last 3 seasons in a row. So what should Rodgers be targeting?

2012/2013: 70 points = 4th, 5th, or 6th

i dont think he should be looking that far ahead, we`ve got a really tough start, he should be just concentrating on that.
he should be worrying how his signings do as well, in terms of legendary status kenny dalglish is up there with the bill shankly`s at this club but it didnt stop people questioning his judgement after the likes of hendo, adam, carroll etc didnt exactly hit the ground running. questions were being asked quite early on too, we are talking weeks here not months.
if carroll leaves, we lose 3 or 4 of our opening 5 matches (which include city, united and arsenal) and borini and dempsey look like they couldnt put a dent in a rice pudding he will be under pressure, new manager or not.
it`s the modern way.
even sunderland away (our 4th game) could be a tricky fixture, martin o neill sides tend to be hard to beat and that ground is frigging jinxed, if there was such a thing as a freakish goal of the season award you could put money on it being against us at the stadium of light.
saying that we could win them all and start the season at the top of the league having beaten 3 of our title rivals, depends how you look at it i suppose.

Rodgers outlines tour benefits

http://www.lfctour.com/news/rodgers-outlines-tour-benefits

Brendan Rodgers could not hide his excitement at the prospect of embarking on Liverpool's pre-season tour of North America when he spoke to Liverpoolfc.com just before the squad departed from John Lennon Airport earlier this afternoon.

Rodgers and his team will spend two weeks stateside preparing for clashes against Toronto FC in Canada on July 21, AS Roma at Fenway Park on July 25, and Tottenham in Baltimore on July 28.

And the manager explained how he was looking forward to touching down in Boston and building on what he believes has already proved to be a positive and productive pre-season at Melwood.

"We've had a real good couple of weeks work at home and obviously when you travel abroad, especially to great countries like America and Canada, you find out different things about the group," said the manager.

"We're really looking forward to the sun - we had a bit of rain this morning in Liverpool! The whole group - the players, the staff - is looking forward to it."

A selection of youngsters joined Rodgers and his squad as they left Liverpool for the three-game tour and the manager revealed how he will use the trip to the US to analyse every player in his squad.

"It's a great pre-season for me because I get to look at the younger players and the senior players," said Rodgers. "So they all feel there's hope right through the club.

"I've also got some of the staff from the Academy coming with me. I feel it's important that they understand how I work, on and off the field, because when we come back, it all becomes really, really busy and you're getting into your focus for the games.

"So it's a great integration for the players and the staff and we will enjoy it and work hard which is important."

Liverpool will set up base at Harvard Univeristy when they arrive in the states. The university boasts fine training facilities including full-size indoor running tracks and three Olympic pools.

"I think Harvard University is one of the most renowned and historic universities in the world," explained Rodgers. "So for us it's a real privilege to go there and do our work.

"But the most important thing is our mentality. First and foremost, the objective is to go and work and work hard. And secondly it's to bring the great name of Liverpool to other supporters over in that part of the world. Most importantly, we're there to work and work hard."

Rodgers' first game as Liverpool manager will come against Toronto on July 21 and whilst the boss is excited to finally take up position in the Reds dug-out, he insists that results aren't everything in pre-season.

"When you're a player, a coach or a manager, you never want to lose any game that you play," he said. "But I certainly won't be losing sleep over it.

"Of course we haven't got the majority of our squad and some of the core players within our group here but the most important thing at the minute is that we're getting players up to speed.

"Our objective is the first pre-season game. We want to get that underway and then conentrate on the first league game which is on the 18th and that's when we'll look to be ready."

He should try to get more than 52 points.

Read that Carra said about one of Rodger's training tasks is to win the ball in 7 seconds. I guess we will see a lot of pressing next season

Liverpool though we underwent a bit of a slump in recent years is still a big club and it's rightful place is still to be among the giants of Europe despite all the ridicule that rival fans have been throwing at us. If they continue to do so, they are afraid of a Reds revival. Why aren't they making fun about all the lesser sides in the PL, why always Liverpool? Doesn't that tells you something? IMO all sides that came to Liverpool, even the top sides, came to defend and were over the moon when they got their coveted draw. This shows that Liverpool are still a side widely respected and feared.

In terms of number of trophies won, we're still the most successful club in British football. And B.R. knows that managing Liverpool is not like managing Swansea, it is stressful and he must know that Houllier was fired not because he finished 8th but he couldn't win the PL. The season he was fired, we did qualify for CL. So the ultimate and eventual goal of Liverpool is still to win the PL and knock Fergie and his manure off their bloody perch forever. Whether B.R. can do it or not, only time can tell.

Rodger's aim for Liverpool next season should be, dare I say, to aim high and  to win the PL. I know this will make the world laugh but we have to aim high. Last season, FSG asked Kenny to just qualify for CL, I suppose aim for 4th, look where we finished? So Rodgers should do all he can to aim for top spot and see where we finish next May. If we don't qualify for CL, our best players Suarez, Skrtel, Agger could be gone by Jan '13 and most definitely summer of 2013. Since Kenny took over, we've beaten all the sides except Spurs who finished above us, Manure twice, 3-1 in PL, 2-1 in FA Cup, Man City 2 times, 3-0 (PL), 1-0(Carling Cup), Arsenal 1-0 (PL at their backyard), Chelsea, Everton and Newcastle (so many times I lost count). So we need not fear them and we are capable of beating them and the lesser sides of course. So there is absolutely no reason why Rodgers should not aim for top spot. I am not saying I expect us win the league next season but that should be what he must be aiming for and not aim for finishing more than 52 points and above 8th place.

All the best Brendan Rodgers.

With the players in the squad right now how do you think Rogers’ best 11 would line up? This is my guess.

I’d go with;  Reina; Johnson, Skirtel, Agger, Enrique; Aqua, Lucas, Stevie G; Suarez (right of 3), Borini (left of 3), Carroll (through middle).  I aint too sure if Carroll would fit to be honest BUT, with a strong on the ball middle three, and two of the best attacking full backs in the league who would provide width throughout the 90, I’d be intrigued to see how Carroll up top through the middle ruffling a few feathers would do.

I'd go with something like this:

                       Reina
Johnson     Skrtel    Agger    Enrique
                 Lucas     Aquilani
                     Gerrard
Suarez                                New winger
                     Borini

Bellamy can only play a few matches so should stay as a reserve.

BR is going to be under immense pressure and scrutiny next season. Lets not give him more pressure. Aiming high is good but realistic is important for target setting as well. If the target is too far-fetch, he may take lots of risk to speed up progress so that he may have slight chance to make it. However shd it fail. All is lost and we will be going backwards. With the new style of play we are expected to play under BR, i say our current crop of players will need alot of adapting to do.

I say Reina, Johnson, Skrtel, Agger, Enrique, Lucas, Henderson, Gerrard, Borini out atking left, Downing atking right & Suarez up top.
