As for Rodgers - I'm perfectly entitled to my opinion and I'm certainly worried about the future with him and our owners. Rodgers has a chance and everyone will support. Just because I'm concerned and worried I will be supporting when that first game comes around. So far Rodgers hasn't proved he is good enough to a manager at our club but it's now up to him to prove that. I'm not going to justify that same opinion on here on a daily basis. We are taking a massive risk and I hope it works out.

The over reaction and high expectations are already going into overdrive - we have people comparing him to Shanks and Paisley already FFS when he hasn't even managed one game for us.

Sorry Benny but that is a load of utter tosh! You talk as if you have never criticised any of our players!

And as for people comparing Brendan to Shanks I'd rather have that than your tedious boring negative sh.ite !!! But as you say you are entitled to your opinion even if it is a depressing one.

people are comparing his performance in the press conference to shankly not his whole career, and i havent heard one person compare him to paisley.
there was an air of shankly about him on friday, especially the part where he left no one in doubt about how he felt about working under a DoF.
even the echo mentioned it.
that doesnt mean he will achieve what shankly did or anywhere near it it just means that some of his mannerisms reminded people of a manager we had half a century ago.

Shankly shouldn't even be mentioned - its an overreaction to a press conference and a few articles - people getting far to far ahead of themselves

People on 5live comparing him to both the greats and stating he is ten times the manager Kenny or Rafa was !! Based on what exactly ?

Some of the things he has said are encouraging and his one season in the prem was decent but I have read people and listen to people talk about top 4 next season and titles to come straight after ?!?

I think he should have someone at the club who is proven and expirenced to help. It's ok doing it all at Swansea - it's different under Liverpool.

Why shouldnt we mention Shankly?
Shankly was quite young (46) when he came here, Rodgers is 39. We were in the second division and struggling, we are in the prem but sit mid table and have 22 years of not being champions. Shankly had passion, heart, a vision and a philosophy, so has Rodgers. Shankly was a celt, so is Rodgers.
These are the obvious comparisons but Im sure there are more?

Well in that case i will say Jay S is the new Gerrard, hes home grown, and plays in midfield.

Lets not forget media compaired Dirk to Kenny after 2 games.

Best fans in the world we are! (So people say) So let's get behind the manager and stop being so negative before a ball has been kicked
Our job is simple, to support the club, not just parts of the club that are easy to support, but every one who plays a part, that includes ALL players.  We are stronger when we are all walking in the same direction. Walk On

Say what you like mate
Dont forget that it took years for Shankly to become a legend. He started off here as a mediocre manager at a mediocre club with a sh'ithole of a ground and took three seasons to get promoted. Some people think he came to Liverpool and suddenly he was the finished article

Brendan Rodgers believes there will always be a section of the Anfield support set against him.

But the young manager whose appointment last week heralded a new Liverpool dawn, insisted he won’t let that distract him from the long term aim of taking the club to the top again.

Following his surprise arrival after just one season as a boss in the Premier League, there were complaints from some fans that Rodgers doesn’t have the experience to lead such a massive club.

Add to that the sympathy for a genuine Anfield legend in the form of predecessor Kenny Dalglish, and an overwhelming level of support for another previous boss Rafa Benitez, and Rodgers knows he will be under intense scrutiny from sceptical Reds.

Yet on his appointment he revealed he won’t be losing any sleep... because he knows that for a certain group of fans, nothing can ever be good enough.

“There are three types of supporters at every club. Number one is those who, no matter who the manager is, they love their club and will love their manager whoever it is,” he explained.

“Here, Liverpool is their life and their passion, and that is who they are.

"The second group is those supporters who will accept you but to earn their real respect you will have to be successful - and that’s fine by me.

“The third group are the critics, and you never change them. Ever. If you win 4-0 it should have been five, if you win the league you should have won three.

“But I will never worry about that group, because you can never affect them. If you do a good job you are proving them right, but they can’t be proved wrong so they will kill you even more.”

Realism was a word Rodgers used a lot on his arrival at Anfield, because he knows it is a massive task to make Liverpool a top four contender again.

For the Northern Ireland born boss though, simply rejoining the Champions League elite at the top of the table isn’t good enough in the long term.

He wants to turn the Reds into title contenders again - though he accepts it could take years to do that... and even if he does, there will be some fans for whom it is not good enough.

“ I’m open and honest and understand not everybody will want me here - but that’s part of the dance,” he admitted.

“I only want to work with the people who love the club. I have always had good relations with the media and supporters, and they are realistic as well.

“They are beginning this cycle of realism as well. There is no doubt they want to be winners, because I do as manager, and so do the players. But in order to do that the cycle has to begin somewhere. I hope it starts here and now.”

As part of the plan, Rodgers has already explained he will need to bring at least three or four players into the club, to help facilitate the style of play he wants to impose on Anfield.

Yet he also passionately believes he has inherited the foundations of a squad that is good enough to aim much higher than the eighth place finish in the Premier League that ultimately cost Dalglish his job.

“We are talking about a project, and it will take time, but we are not aiming just to get in the top four. At a club like Liverpool, the aim has to be for the very top,” he said.

“We know we have to be realistic, and it will take time for that to happen, but there are some top class players here who can make a difference.

“For a start, there’s a world class goalkeeper in Pepe Reina. He came through at Barcelona, so he will know this way I’d like to bring in and the principles of the game.

“You’ve got Glen Johnson, who can be the world’s best right-back. Jose Enrique will only get better.

"You’ve got your two centre halves, Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger, who’ve done really well, and a legend in Jamie Carragher who will always provide great challenge and motivation for the group.

“Then there are other players like Luis Suarez who is a great talent and scores great goals, and Steven Gerrard who - when he’s fit - is the ultimate.

“I am excited about everything about this city. It’s a city of folklore and football and I am proud to be a part of it.”

And Rodgers also revealed predecessor Dalglish will find a welcome for him at Anfield.

“I have the ultimate respect for Kenny and my door is always open for him. This is his home - he is the heart and soul of this club.

“He is the best player in the history of this club and his love for it is unrivalled. I am not here to win any race or competition, this guy is a legend in the game and here at Liverpool Football Club.”

Brendan Rodgers just says all the right things doesn't he? I can't wait for the season to get started already. Forget Euro 2012, I want to us our team under Rodgers in pre-season.

Brendan did miss out on the forth kind of supporter though.

Supporters like Heimy, Reggy and his missus maypax. Here is the 4th kind in definition.

The 4th kind of supporter that Rodgers forgot to add was the hybrid supporter of the 2nd grouping and the unique 4th mob. They are relatively happy with his appointment, support him initially to 'see' how he goes.... After A defeat, the 4th supporter is truly born as rationale goes out the window; and instead the knives come in to slam into the managers back. However, their emotions are content again after another win - but when defeat rears it's head (again), the dissent and protesters of 'OUT NOW' become more vociferousness than the 3 previous groups can muster altogether, they then demand change and their repetitive cycle begins again.

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has told ESPN that he was misinterpreted after Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre hit out at him over the "sideshow" that accompanied the Roberto Martinez talks.

• Whelan: Martinez staying put
• Whelan warns Martinez over Reds
• Whelan: Martinez talking to Reds

Prior to the appointment of Swansea manager Brendan Rodgers, Liverpool had held talks with Wigan boss Martinez in the US. During that process, Whelan had provided updates to media outlets, including ESPN, but the Reds took exception to his actions and Ayre labelled him a "comedian".

"Our aim from the outset was to conduct a proper, thorough, search and do it in the proper manner," Ayre told the Liverpool Echo. "From our point of view, we did all the right things. We approached the clubs we needed to approach, and conducted ourselves properly at all times.

"It is disappointing, then, that Dave Whelan felt the need to run the kind of sideshow he conducted via Sky Sports News and various other media outlets. To be honest, I always thought John Bishop was the biggest comedian in the North West but Dave Whelan seems to have taken that mantle over the last couple of weeks."

It was also suggested that Whelan had claimed Martinez had been offered the Liverpool job. Ayre added: "That is patently not true. We make no secret of the fact we spoke with Roberto Martinez, but that is all we did.

"He is a great guy, and I can't speak highly enough of his professionalism and conduct, but for his chairman to make suggestions like he has, and suggestions that just aren't true - well, it is disappointing to say the least. We can say with absolute certainty that the only person who was made any offer by Liverpool Football Club is Brendan Rodgers."

Whelan, though, did not specifically state that Martinez had been offered the Liverpool job and he has stressed that he "never said that".

He told ESPN: "I cannot help it if some people misinterpreted what I said, which was that Liverpool wanted our manager - which they did as they asked permission to speak with him, and talked to him on a number of occasions."

The Wigan chairman also offered a diplomatic response to Ayre's "comedian" remark and said he wished Rodgers success in the role.

"My response is a simple one - I wish Liverpool all the very, very best with their new manager," Whelan added. "They have appointed a super lad for the job, a very good manager, and I am very happy for them. We've kept Roberto Martinez, so I wish them luck for next season."
