The continued reappearance of the Alonso thread and the fact that big Sami Hyypia scored for Leverkusen yesterday, got me thinking about how this true LFC legend was actually doing for Leverkusen this season in general terms. As it is, he is doing VERY well indeed, in a season where our own defence has been all over the place much of the time. After 19 rounds played Leverkusen are undefeated and leading the (tight) Bundesliga two points ahead of the (by german standards) free spending Bayern Munich. They have scored the most goals and conceded the joint least, and big Sami has played all but 16 minutes of Leverkusen's games, which makes him their second most utilised player (behind league topscorer Kiessling). It seems the big man can still play :cool:

I can only congratulate Sami on this, and hopefully by the end of the season he'll have a championship medal to show for his efforts (unlike his old teammates

Wish he was still here, he would probably been a fixture in the team this season, Alonso was definitely going but we could have kept Sami.

Hyypia was under used last year. Agger was injured for most of the season and Carragher and Skrtel both had periods were they were way below their best. Almost every season he was written off but almost every season he would go on to be a key player for us and the season before last he was our best performing defender. Rafa made a blunder not playing him more last season as he is better than the 4 centre backs we currently have.

I wish he had stayed the irony is as has been posted earlier is that he would probably have played in the majority of games, his influence and experience would have been a great help to us this season.

I suspect Just like Heynckes, many people thought that Hyypia's glory days were behind him when he moved from Liverpool to Bayer in the summer, sped on his way with the best wishes of The Kop.

Now 36, and after 10 distinguished years at Anfield, Hyypia appears rejuvenated by the change of surroundings and the chance of regular first team football again.

The Finn has been arguably the best central defender in the Bundesliga this season and with the German national team goalkeeper Rene Adler behind him, the pair have maintained a sense of stability and solidity at the back as well as Leverkusen's unbeaten record.

Hyypia has been open about the fact that he is hugely motivated by the possibility of winning a league title, something he was unable to do in his decade at Liverpool despite all his other honours during his time there.

The season is still far from over yet. Bayern Munich are breathing down their neck with Louis van Gaal's men having forgotten their early season problems and rattled off seven successive wins to leave them only two points adrift of Bayer.

Nevertheless, I have a feeling that Bayer fans might soon be able to stop using their self-mockingly nickname of 'The Neverkusen'.

We may see him back at Anfield in the future then either as an opposing manager or as Liverpool manager if he makes a good go of it.

Good luck to him, if he's half as good a manager as he was defender then Leverkusen are on to a good thing.
