Like everybody else said you've gotta take the job.  Sounds like you've made up your mind tho, and that's great.  This is possibly a once in a lifetime opportunity, but if you take it then you'll probably be happier.  You'll make more money in the long run, and have the option to move back to the north east and play some 5 a side with Big Andy.

The fact you've always been a northeast guy just means you haven't experienced other places.  Once you go see what it's like living in different places, you'll really know where you've enjoyed to live the most.

Most would jump at a chance like that, I know I would.  let us know how it goes.

In my heart I want the job. Put it this way I can't and won't turn it down. The experience is what I need and if I can pack my bag and do this then I can do it for anything. Team leader is one position below what I applied for, there's less emphasis on the fast track promotion basically because the manager role was a grad scheme. They've interviewed me and they know what it is I want to do with my life and my general outlook so it won't be a dead end job. I'm going to call them today with a few key questions but I think I'm ready to just go for it - at the end of the day if I don't like it I have my family and friends here to return to, if I don't accept it I'll always wonder what if

BTW people, I'm from the North East - I only studied in Leeds - I'm not a Yorkshireman!! I sound like Andy Carroll, though I'm slightly better at football than he is  :D

Thanks for the advice lads and lasses, I'll share the rest of the info as it comes

Sounds like the right decision mate.  If the idea of the job scares you just a little bit and pushes you out of your comfort zone it's well worth going after.  Especially when you're young and unencumbered.  Playing it too safe will not help you grow.  Besides, the importance of bona fide work experience cannot be overstated in this competitive economy.  Good luck.

I've received the job description and person spec. It's actually a management role, just awaiting my assessment date and location and I'm off!  :D

I'm pretty excited about it now, good chance to spread my wings and broaden my horizons  :)

It's a no brainer Greavesie, take the job. Frankly, in the current climate, you'd be mad not too. Also, your first full time role being a manager will put you in great standing for future positions.

I'm about to lose my job. Getting made redundant again. 3rd time in less than a decade! And Ireland is in an even worse situation than England as far as jobs are concerned.

Good luck Greavsie, where is it?

its with a Logistics company, they're pretty big though and have secured some pretty big contracts

unless you mean location, in which case it hasn't been decided yet, I'm secretly hoping it isn't London, I genuinely believe that will be one hell of a culture shock for a wee Geordie lad  :D

Take the job - a job is better than no job first of all. It doesn't mean you have to stay there your whole life. The first part of the career is usually spent bouncing around trying a few things out...sorta like dating, plenty of flavours to try before you commit to anything.

Based on what you've studied you're obviously looking to follow the management route and that truly comes down in my opinion to hands on experience of dealing within an organisation and with people, both above and below you on an org chart. The more exposure you can get of that, the better off you will be. I wouldn't see it any differently than what you described as the graduate program you were looking for. Set your boundaries with your employer at the beginning with regards remuneration etc but also highlight the development side of things. Clearly they see potential in you and want to put you in a particular role. It isn't unreasonable for you to highlight this is something different than you were initially looking for, but you're flexible and interested and want to build a development plan with them so you can grow into the role.

At the risk of sounding like a really old basrad, don't fall for the illusion of company's being well run or that people hit management roles with the capabilities required. Most of what you have probably experienced until now is true in most organisations and there are a lot of numpties out there, so don't put yourself any lower than them :). Managing is really all about common sense, saying what you think needs to happen in a positive and constructive manner and treating people around you and those especially you are leading in the same manner you would like yourself. Keep that in mind and you won't go far wrong.

Quick note on this comment although it seems you're on the right track. Don't get too caught up the job description and 'type of function'. In my experience you can make a lot out of whatever place you find yourself in. Get in and start doing what you're meant to be doing well first off and then spread your wings. You'll have to earn some credit, but it'll be plain sailing from then on it. If the place you're going to doesn't offer the chance for growth, you'll at least have trained yourself up well for the next position elsewhere
