work dilemma

hey guys, need a little bit of advice

I recently graduated from my masters and applied for a graduate scheme,. the company called me today and said based on my interview I'm more suited to a permanent position in the business which isn't a development role, its a team leader role. I haven't got all of the information as of yet but they said it will involve relocating

so here's my problem, I've been struggling to get any sort of graduate work and the experience of being a team leader might get me on a career ladder where graduate work won't be required anymore - I think it'll open a lot of doors where I'd be ahead of graduates because of the experience this will give me. On the flip side I'm a little bothered about relocating, I lived in leeds for uni and that was pretty cool, I enjoyed that loads but I'm unsure about a permanent relocation, everything I know is in the north east

What would you do? Should I just accept the relocation and get the experience?

Salary hasn't been discussed yet btw, nor has the specific location but it's definitely not the north east

Any advice would be appreciated lads and lasses

thanks

Yer know Greavsie if they'd told you that "you'd have to re-locate to Hawaii" I doubt you'd be asking us for advice

Anyway mate, take the job, anything that gets you away from Leeds has gotta be worth it.

Take the job.

As a team leader you will go on a lot of courses that are basically bullsh!t but are great for the business world (how to manage, how to work out differences blah blah blah)
I even went on a course where it showed what type of person I was (Desmond TuTu, Mandela, a few others, think I was Mugabe lol)

You will also gain a lot more experience working with other people, being in charge of others and gaining a lot of experience. Take it

got to admit I'm kind of leaning towards real life experience will be greater than any piece of paper I have. I genuinely wanted to work somewhere where my development would be key (ie a grad scheme) but that doesn't mean I'll be in a dead end - there's always opportunity I guess. In this day and age maybe I'll have to gain the experience and work my way up the old school way. I'm only 24, still plenty of offer

I'm more bothered if I don't take it I'll be stuck in the dead end job I'm in now, it's only the relocating part that bothers me - mind if it's anywhere within driving distance of Anfield I'll be there

i've uprooted myself a few times from places i've felt comfortable and settled; from where i grew up to liverpool, from liverpool to bristol, back to liverpool, from liverpool to barcelona, then from barcelona to gijon. its always a hard decision to take but its always worth it in the end. you also find out who are your real friends and who are just passing acquaintances.

as others have said, relocating is always daunting at first but you'll soon get used to it and meet new friends.

graduate role = graduate wages unfortunately.
for me the biggest factor is what salary is on offer and i wouldnt be packing any bags till that was clarified.
you could go to oz or canada where graduates get decent money and you will earn your experience and have a ball in much better lifestyle and at 24 now is the time to do it.
this offer could relocate you to skegness and pay just a little more than you currently earn so i would seek out the details before accepting anything.
what was it you got your masters in greavsie?

Take the job mate, first 2 years of job experience is the most important part of your life as I found out when I relocated to Abu Dhabi (stayed there for 2 years). Get the experience first, you aren't married so you don't have to worry where you will live

my Masters is in Business and Legal Management - the legal part isn't as dominant as it sounds, it was mainly business

one of the main factors is the wage I'll be honest, it'll be pointless moving if it's going to eat the majority of my wage

The other part is hurt pride I guess, 'you're not good enough for that but how about this' kind of thing

The experience will be too hard to turn down I think. I'm just awaiting an e-mail with the finer details, then I'll know where it is and how much its worth. The other thing I need to know is if they'll look after me and help me progress/develop

I'd love the opportunity to move about and visit other countries and things but I do have a desire to at least have a base to return to should I want to unwind and settle down - might be me wanting the best of both worlds that's making the dilemma  :D

take the job and persue the job you really want.

I worked in crappy call centres for 2 years before getting my big break as a journalist. It's a lot easier to go from job to job...than explain in an intervew why you've been unemployed for a long time

Mate, when I graduated (many moons ago :) ) the first job I could find was in a foreign country - Germany. I had a bit of the language going over, not much, so it was a bit daunting. I stuck it for 2.5 years, then for various reasons packed it in and went back home to Ireland.....years later, I was still using the language skills I developed over there and it opened many many doors to me.
Not that you have to learn a new language where you're going....the point is: you never know how your first move may benefit you years down the line.....who knows - go for it...

Depends on your level of motivation. If its more important to stay in your comfort zone then stay in Leeds but if you did a masters becuase you actually want to make a success of life then inevitably you have to pack your bag and go chase your dream.

We're all different but I'd relocate just about anywhere if a suitable role was offered. What is a Team Leader? Does it tally with having a masters? Don't undersell yourself, you need a 3 year job then move on but the first job is pretty darn important.

I've just got back from work and thought about it all night - nightshift generally makes me analyse everything to high heavens

In my heart I want the job. Put it this way I can't and won't turn it down. The experience is what I need and if I can pack my bag and do this then I can do it for anything. Team leader is one position below what I applied for, there's less emphasis on the fast track promotion basically because the manager role was a grad scheme. They've interviewed me and they know what it is I want to do with my life and my general outlook so it won't be a dead end job. I'm going to call them today with a few key questions but I think I'm ready to just go for it - at the end of the day if I don't like it I have my family and friends here to return to, if I don't accept it I'll always wonder what if

BTW people, I'm from the North East - I only studied in Leeds - I'm not a Yorkshireman!! I sound like Andy Carroll, though I'm slightly better at football than he is  :D

Thanks for the advice lads and lasses, I'll share the rest of the info as it comes
