4th or Trophies debate

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby maguskwt » Thu Apr 26, 2012 7:14 am

If we win the FA cup, I will be to a certain extent satisfied for this season. However, if we do not win it, I will be disappointed. The real measure of progress I'm afraid is the league position. And that's why finishing 4th is also important. Because it shows that we have progressed. Financially and in terms of attracting top players, it is absolutely necessary to finish top4 and competing in the CL. Finishing 4th is actually better for building a team to be challenging the league than winning the FA cup. Outside of England, nobody really cares about the FA cup.

Outside of us winning trophies , I couldn't give a hoot who wins what & where....it's what my club wins that matters not what anyone thinks....I would watch Liverpool Football club under any circumstances and sure I want us to do well in the league...ffs I attend every home game so I would appreciate a "return on my investment" (put a money analogy in 'cuz apparently it's just about the money , money, money ) , but never will I denigrate the Cup competitions in my country as if they were worthless....

I am so glad I am me because it appears I get more enjoyment from following Liverpool than a lot of others on Newkit.....I also have some bad days but I get over it better....Viagra wonderful stuff :wwww

The FA Cup final is the third most watched single football match behind the WC Final and the CL Final with billions around the world watching it. So your last statement is in fact utter rubbish. It is the most prestigious cup competition in football

every single player when they retire has a room in their mansion full of their achievements and memories earned throughout their career.
what does anyone think they prefer? a glass case full of medals? or a glass case full of league printouts of their finishing position in red?.
players treasure big finals and big days and whether they end up with a gold or silver at the end of it they would be more proud of that than a feckin piece of paper.

This is a no brainer for me. 4th would get us CL football which would bring in more money and attract better players thus making us a better side. In terms of this season both cups (assuming we win the FA Cup) only serve to paper over the cracks. Also the fact that we are so many points of the pace means we are even less likley to attract top quality players like we were able to before.

But if we were in the CL we could be winning that. I think players want to be competing with the best and that means the CL.

I am not under the illusion that our team is the finished article.......I said back in 2001 the treble papered over the cracks and we had to invest in the team to push on, but I wouldn't forsake those cup wins or any cup wins just to guarantee we had CL football every season........ Hypothetically I would not relish 10 years of champions league football if it came with a void of no cup finals or cups during the same period......we exist to win things, not to keep the tv viewers happy

just to get back to the paper cracks........... I have every faith that the owners, unlike the previous muppets, will realise that investment is needed and on the back of 1 cup and the possibility of another , they will spend the summer doing so.

well they should do, i doubt if there is a more important trophy in the history of the game including the world cup and champions league.
before the f.a cup football was just one of a number of half ar$ed sports being played that were loosely based on the free for all rugby type games played in british universities. infact every university had a different set of rules for their particular game.
the idea of a national trophy for one particular version of the game caught the publics imagination, especially with the working classes who slaved away in the `dark satanic mills`, iron foundries and smokestack industries of the north and midlands.
communities, churches, trade unions and athletic clubs got together and formed clubs and teams to compete for this prestigous trophy, this was at a time when america was having a civil war and australia as we know it wasnt even a country for another 40 years.
the f.a cup proved to be so popular right throughout britain (at that time scottish clubs played in it, infact evertons first ever f.a cup tie was versus glasgow rangers, years before we were formed) that clubs couldnt wait for the following season to play competative football again so the aston villa chairman who was a scot came up with the idea of playing a league in order to pass the time between the f.a cup coming around again.
the idea of a league came about because of the f.a cup.
the f.a cup was the reason football became so popular in britain, without the f.a cup there is a good chance that the likes of rugby and cricket would have been the dominant sports in britain. when you look at sporting giants like real madrid, barcelona, bayern munich, ac milan etc they all owe their existance to the f.a cup.

even reina has come out in the latest lfc magazine and said that he thinks we've moved forward this season which tells you what players think in terms of what they want to achieve. winning two trophies would build confidence for next season.

For me it is simple.
The ultimate goal is the league, nothing else.
Finishing fourth after a long 38 league campaign tells me that we are making progress and getting closer to the league.
Cups are nice but finishing midtable in the league means we are miles away from the league and next season is going to be a another season without a chance or hope for the league title.

4th by itself is then nice by itself since it bring that extra revenue which some people doesn't realise how important that is LONG TERM. Cups means very little at all long term both financially and how we progress as a team.
The american owners isn't going to go arab style with us, so making it to the CL will mean we can spend more on better players. Which in turn will make us a better team and there you have a positive spriral
that will allow us to compte for the ultiamte prize, the league. There is no other way.

I find it astounding that there are Liverpool supporters who quite frankly don't feel winning trophies is a worthwhile event in a clubs existence..........I can only assume these anti-cup brigade don't go , so the whole cup final fervour is alien to them........

I have no doubt the history that our great club is steeped in, means absolutely squat to many of the CL viewing officianado's
