4th or Trophies debate

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Postby RedAnt » Wed Apr 25, 2012 2:26 am

This thread kinda shaves the fat off what happened to football. Money took over. We saw it coming but it was so sneaky that we never really noticed that it was there. We just accepted it blindly. The fact is that money (top 4) is the top prize now to businessmen like FSG, but to many fans, the trophies still take precedence. But more and more fans have been drawn into the belief that it's about money (top 4) and as the years pass and new generations come along, it's just like anything in life, we take what we're born into as normal. I suppose in 50 years time this debate will be extinct and Top Four (or whatever format is around) will be the one and only answer.

I can't see why one needs to equate top 4 to just money.

Top 4 means the chance to play Real, Barca, Milan, Inter, teams you want to be comparing yourself to, like we used to once. Hell, Real was our b*tch back then. It's great to see the team win trophies but we want to be back there, and this season has only seen us slip away from there even further, this after spending such a ridiculous amount of money.

But there is pleasure to be had in the ascent back to the top that we'll eventually make, and for now we must accept that it's not going to happen so soon. This is a matter of both having patience and also making a realistic estimation of self worth. As for the season, I'm not convinced by cup runs, sorry, I need to see our team win on a regular basis, not just show up only for a few select matches.

Another record. BTW cheatski won't be arsed about the FA cup now they are in CL final. So we could end up with 2 cups and the mange with fook all YNWA

Terry and co are still able to play in teh FA cup final, they're just european bans? In principle the FA cup final will be their last game and chance to win a medal so they'll come full on. The lads suspended wont get CL medals will they?

My points really was about how the world of football is now divided and how the 'old school' fans may well be extinct in 50 years time. The money men se a simple equation.....put money in, reach the CL, earn money and attract players so they can earn more money to attract more players so they can earn more money. Fans on the other hand (or many at least) want the same things but for different reasons. We wanna see our captain lift trophies. We wanna see the worlds best players on the Anfield turf. We want once more to be proud champions of everything. FSG want that too i'm sure, and whilst i'm sure they also do like our club, the main priority for them is £.

i'll sum it up by saying this.

ask any chelsea fan if they'd be happy now losing to us in the fa cup final, losing the champions league final but finishing 4th.

Or also.. How many of us would be happy if we hadn't of won the Carling Cup, hadn't of gotten to the FA Cup final but finished 4th and Chelsea win the CL.  It would have lead to the same outcome minus the silverware.

I'd actually be very happy with that as it would show we had some real progress this season. To get 4th we would have to play consistently well over a whole season. Imo thats were we really see if the team is moving in the right direction.

If i considered liverpool to be a midtable team with no nopes of challenging at the highest level i'd probably be a lot more happy with the carling cup.

It's pointless challenging, if at the end of every season you have zip to show for it......finishing empty handed is failure but I've been a glory hunter for the past 45+ years and I am hungry for more .....I would like a league campaign to justify my season ticket outlay every year but I won't be lining the streets for open top bus tour for finishing 2nd, 3rd or 4th .....One can only assume the supporters who prefer a place bet instead of on the nose won't be walking up Wembley Way to watch the match because it means nothing to them......hopefully if the result goes our way they may tune in for the highlights

The only way to reach the top is to move up the table.

Sorry if i think this club should be aiming to win the league and not just struggle to beat the likes of cardiff in the league cup. Its not that long ago we were a feared team and I had some real hope we could win the league. Atm it does not look like the team is moving back up amongst the best clubs in the league.

And next season we will move up the table and perhaps one day we will win the league and on other occasions we will finish 2nd , 3rd 4th and 5th 6th etc....and when you look back on your life you can be proud of the almost won somethings in the league...I however will look back with fond memories of the things we actually won and recall the days , weekends and short trips watching us do it....the pictures of the players proudly holding a trophy, pictures of me and the other fans rejoicing at the stadia where the cups were won..................

I hope you will be able to stay around for the ride because I've got another 50 years to go and I'm not finished hunting for pots.....When the day comes when we win the league, I'll be there and I now I stayed positive through the wind and the rain with the people that matter

What about a 17th place league finish plus a Carling Cup win (followed by an open top bus tour) versus a 2nd place finish and a title challenge?

It isn't simply about winning now, it's about building a team that can continue to win into the future and win the bigger, more prestigious trophies. You would be a lot more confident that we had a team capable of doing just that if we were in the top four, rather than 8th.
