Liverpool target Johan Cruyff for senior role following Comolli's exit
By Ben Smith
BBC Sport Johan Cruyff is among the names being targeted by Liverpool after Damien Comolli's departure as director of football, BBC Sport understands.

Reds owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) have yet to draw up a definitive shortlist to replace Comolli.

But the Dutchman, 64, has impressed FSG chief John W Henry in his senior roles with Ajax and Chivas in Mexico.

Cruyff, who coaches the Catalan representative side, has also recently stepped down from a role with Ajax.

While FSG do not intend to radically alter the structure of the club, they are keen to bring in a respected name who can operate in a role that will both assist manager Kenny Dalglish, while overseeing the recruitment and scouting of players.

ruyff, who won three European Cups as a player with Ajax between 1971 and 1973, is one of a number of names under consideration, although it is not known if he is interested in moving to Anfield.

Txiki Begiristain, the former Barcelona director of football, is also well thought of, while Louis van Gaal, who has been out of work since being sacked as coach of Bayern Munich in April last year, has indicated he would consider the position were he to be approached.

Liverpool were unavailable for comment after a day of departures from Anfield.

Sources close to Comolli indicated that he had been stunned by his sudden dismissal, having been informed by Henry and chairman Tom Werner late on Tuesday night. The Liverpool players were then told at a hastily arranged meeting at the Melwood training ground the next morning.

Commoli's dismissal appeared to signal the first stage of a backroom overhaul. The sports science team assembled by Christian Purslow, during his spell as managing director under Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr, is also to be dismantled, with Peter Brukner, the head of sports science, leaving the club.

Kenny Dalglish was, however, told he continues to enjoy the "full support" of the club's owners.

"We've got great confidence in Kenny," Werner said. "We feel the team is going to make strides in the future."

Cruyff, who was on a supervisory board at the Amsterdam Arena, stepped down from his role after a long-running feud with Ajax directors and fellow board members.

He won a court battle in February overturning the appointments of Van Gaal and Martin Sturkenboom against his wishes.

The supervisory board quit after losing the case, and Cruyff eventually resigned on Wednesday with an agreement in place for choosing a new board.

Ajax said in a statement that Cruyff will "remain involved with the implementation of his football vision within the club".

What do you think?

GIVE HIM A LUCERATIVE OFFER AND BRING HIM IN NOW! What a signing he would be, the work he did with Ajax and Barca were outstanding

Interesting names, but not necessarily good or the right names for me.

I just can't see Cruyff working out as he comes across as a very meddlesome individual and you just wonder how much he'll rock the boat under Kenny's feet.

Similar could be said of Van Gaal, he's first and foremost a coach/manager.  How long would it be before he's undermining KK cause he fancies a crack at the manager's job himself. It doesn't bode well for long term stability.

Txiki Begiristain on the other hand IS an intriguing name to be linked. He did the job at Barcelona - so has the experience and of doing it at a massive club. PLus you have to look at where Barca are now. I'm not saying we'll be where they are if we appointed him, but he will have been involved in the development of what Barca are now somewhere along the lines and that can be no bad thing.

Even if it's non of the above it seems FSG are determined to press ahead with the DoF and it's very important that they get the right person this time.

So it's looking like Cruyff AND David Dein in? One as a sort of director of football and the other as CEO?
I think this club is in brilliant hands, happy days!!!

I think if both those names do come in it shows the commitment from the owners required to turn our club around. also i think doing it before the semi will light a fire under the players and managers @ss because they need it. Look fore a fired up Liverpool at Wembley!

Have severe reservations about Cruyff. Over the years he has always struck me as one who spits his dummy if he doesn't get his own way, could turn out be yet more trouble.

We shouldn't bring somebody in because of there reputation as a player!
If his name was John Croft and he had played for Tranmere 30 years ago nobody would be fekkin interested.
Thanks but no thanks Johan.

Not sure about this Director of Football thing but despite the Comolli
fiasco they are sticking to their guns by the looks.

If they do manage to being in a DOF with the pedigree of Cruyff or
Van Gaal (and I have my doubts) then it will be curtains for Dalglish surely.

Awkward operating as manager with guys of that calibre waiting in the
wings and much like the Evans/Houllier situation really.

Will end in tears, but I have a feeling Dalglish wont be involved next
season anyway either because he wont be happy with the arrangements
or Fenway just want him out.

Big no to both Cruyff and Van Gaal as DoF !!! They both would cause too much friction.

Would take Txiki Begiristain every day of the week

Yes wouldn't mind Txiki or David Dein but deffo not Van Gaal or Cruyff. They are both too big in terms of ego and would try to wiggle their way into the managers seat should things go wrong for Kenny next season ala Avram Grant at Chelsea.
My new blog for my upcoming holiday.

i dont agree with DoF`s, sooner or later they end up falling out with the manager, especially in this country where they are not part of the footballing culture.
saying that cruyff is an interesting shout, he`s opinionated and arrogant but he was also the best european footballer thats ever lived.
it was cruyff who took the `total football` philosophy to barcelona, he was the architect,  he set the whole club up to play that way, everyone who has followed in the dutchmans steps at the nou camp has been reading from his blueprint.
lets face it that style of footy is the way forward, in the 70`s and 80`s teams could negate that style of play by getting stuck into them and kicking them off the park but these days footy is practically a non contact sport, we`ve just got to accept that the sport isnt a physical game anymore, cruyff`s vision of how the game should be played dovetails with the changes in the rules of the game.
cruyff and kenny actually have a similar philosophy on how the game should be played, kenny`s late 80`s team is up there with the best of them and imo would have played cruyff`s european cup winning barcelona team of the late 80`s off the park if it hadnt been for the ban so their shouldnt be any clashes over the style of footy. there might be clashes because you have two huge ego`s who were great players and i mean great players in their day but at least they`ll agree on the way forward in terms of style.
cruyff being at the club will help us bring talented players to the club too, as a DoF he will be meeting potential transfer targets and lets face it a f**king legend up there with the pele`s and maradona`s working for a historic club like liverpool is going to impress players.
i dont want a DoF, but if we are to have one at least lets have a footballing visionary and not some mathmatician who`s convinced 30 crosses, 40 headers and 12 tackles in the opposition third wins you games.

for those who never saw the dutch master play - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YU-k-Ots3iY&feature=related

I've read he's agreed a deal in principle, though I suspect that's more twitter *****. I really don't know what to think about this but you lot will probably know more about Cruyff than I so I'll go with is it and say its a risky job. I quite like the total football hooha he was involved in - if they're going to persist with this DoF stuff then I just prray they get the right person in, though I fear the structure in itself is hardly a receipe for success...

Is this DoF stuff our Yanks basically saying 'we know nothing about football''?
All round the fields of Anfield Road
Where once we watched the King Kenny play (and could he play!)
Stevie Heighway on the wing
We had dreams and songs to sing
'Bout the glory, round the Fields of Anfield Road
