Reality Check

There's too much doom, gloom and moaning on this forum.

Last week I nearly cashed in my chips whilst out on my bike. Yes, the big one. I posted this on a cycling forum I frequent:

I was turning right from a sideroad onto a mainroad (traffic lights on red for the mainroad and green for me) when a truck went out of control trying to slow down, mounted the central reservation and came careering towards me. Nowt I could do, I thought my time was up. Fortunately he smashed into a central mounted traffic light which reduced his speed. Moving forward would have pout me into his path so I simply dropped the bike on its right side, kicked out of the clips in mid air then against the forward momentum managed to roll backwards 3 or 4 times. The truck came to a halt 3 yards in front of me lying on the road, my bike was under the truck, totalled.

The driver admitted full responsibility, the rozzers came and its been included on the truck company's insurance claim. I'll be able to salvage the rear wheel, everything else is done for. Absolutely gutted.

Observation, when you're faced with a 'Yikes!' situation, its amazing how your senses take over, I bounced and turned as deftly as a cat, just one small graze on my elbow to show for it. The missus says my shorts will wash clean.

The accident was going to happen whether I was there or not, I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. I'm very, very fortunate to be alive. I have a wife and two young sons. Sobering.

++

So before you post depressing drivel about Kenny or Carroll, lets thank g*d for the blessings we DO have rather than  focusing on the negative.

PS yes I am ok thanks, I just sh!t my pants, thats all which is a bit embarrassing.

Glad you're ok mate, had a work colleague a few years ok who similarly, picked a fight with a cement mixer. Turned his bike into a piece of art the Tate gallery would be proud of ! escaped........................if thats what you could call it with a smashed pelvis, leg, and many lacerations where he was blatted down the road.

Reality check indeed.

Can't help laughing re. the eighteen stone, lyrca-clad Reg, bouncing and turning as deftly as a cat  :D  :D !

I cycle in Toronto everyday, it's a risk for sure, one careless driver and your dead.

Lorry was knackered mate, when it ran over the traffic light stump it ruptured the fuel tank and 40 gallon of diesel went all over me bike and the road! Y'know the way you have daft thoughts... I thought to myself when I saw all this fuel dropping ' Thats mah bike!' and ran in and got it. I thought the truck was about to explode like in the films but thought bugger this, I'm going to get my bike! It was only when I got it to the side of the road I realised it was a write-off. Anyway the tow truck pulling away the damaged truck gave me a lift home.

Anyway, I am like a cat, 'cos I've lost a stone to a very svelt 17 stone!   :rasp

I ordered a new bike yesterday, same model, even the same colour but got a special offer as it was a 2011 model (same as the one I lost) paid the same price but with top spec Shimano Dura Ace kit throughout - crank, gears, brakes, the lot.  If the insurance pays out 100% of the claim basis the internet quote I gave them  :ghostface:  I'll be 500 quid up on the deal because of the special offer so theres a small victory.  :buttrock  Got to have it by the end of the month as I have a triathlon first week of May.

Glad you are ok reg and you are right, it does put things in perspective this all means nothing in the big scheme of things. Play hardball with the insurance as they are a bunch of w@nkers that would show no mercy if you were at fault. Tell them you will never be the same again, the bike was given to you by a dead relative, you have no other transportation and have to rent another bike... You could make more for your trouble and the insurance should pay, you just have to not accept the first deal they give you. Most important thing is you wife still has a husband and your kids still have a father (and your washing machine will have a great story to tell it's friends).

As you can tell by the posts, I'm remarkably relaxed considering the accident and losing my bike, I think its a sub-conscious realisation that I'm darn lucky to have survived. I got into bed with the missus that night and realised that I was lucky to be there. Spookie really. Insurance co said they'd pay out in 2-3 weeks, good news is its the next building to our office so any problems I'll be marching through the door.
