"carroll worth f*** all"

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Kenny Kan wrote:Derek Llambias, the man who brokered the deal that made Andy Carroll the most expensive Englishman in football history, has sensationally claimed: “He’s worth f*** all!”

The Toon MD’s disparaging verdict on England striker Carroll (below) came when he was giving a group of Newcastle fans an insight into the £35million deal that took the England striker to Liverpool in January.

Llambias insists that Newcastle got the better of the deal.

The Anfield club’s first bid was £30m and Llambias told the fans: “I have to admit that £30m for Andy Carroll is a lot of money.”

When one supporter asked him “Is he worth £30m?” Llambias responded: “No — he’s worth f*** all.” He then explains that after rejecting the £30m offer, Newcastle refused to sell even for £35m unless Liverpool paid the entire fee up front.

A move that forced Liverpool to ask Chelsea to increase their first instalment of the £50m they had already agreed to pay for Fernando Torres!

Llambias explained: “It is about control.

“We had the control. We knew the Torres deal was there.

“We drew that f****** deal, perhaps the ultimate.

“So £30m? F*** off! Don’t waste my time and I slammed the phone down.

“£35m? Everybody including Pardew [manager Alan Pardew] all agreed.

“But the £35m they wanted to pay over four years. It was rubbish. Mike (Ashley) said — and he is a brave boy Mike I promise you — get all the £35m up front.

“We got it all up front and then they never paid us on time and we charged them 12 grand f****** interest.”

carroll is really starting to play well, he scored against oldham in the cup, set bellamy up for a goal against bolton, set kuyt up against united and caused havoc for agger`s first, worked his ar$e off away at city in the league cup, scored against wolves and now scored today and set suarez up for a goal too.
well done the big fella!

You have to be critical but support him.  Not too many people had faith.  I know theres a few of us that have stood behind him, and it looks like we're finally seeing him play well (I bring this up because for once I'm on the right side of the argument :D )

He needs to keep starting and I'm sure he'll continue to play the way he has.  Thrilled for him.

If Carroll is able to show up against Cardiff & help us lift a trophy i'm willing to ignore his pathetic track record so far this season.

Heres the thing, so have i, the difference being you seem to have changed your tune just because he scored.

The problem is that people are very knee jerk (both in the positive and negative sense). A player could be cr@p for two games and there would be comments of "get rid". A player could score a few goals and he would be called "class".

There is no question he is playing better (he had to as he was farcical for 12 months)...and i expected him to be. However him getting the odd goal (and headed assist) every now and then does not paper over the gaping cracks of him playing in the team (im not just speaking of Andy btw.. im speaking of a player of his type). He may indeed play and score, but its at the detriment of us player better (its similar to Heskey with us). He is a passer less in the team (meaning we will get outnumbered in midfield as he cant drop back and link up), hes too immobile to fit in with a fast interchanging pass and move method of play, he doesnt compliment technical players who want to pass..one-twos etc etc, Suarez doesnt look anywhere near as good when hes paired with him.

I have stated repeatedly.. Andy Carroll will get 15-18 goals in a team that plays direct. The style of play that wins leagues/CL is pass and move is not tailored to Andy Carroll. Can anyone seriously see Andy Carroll upfront in a team that challenges for the League? Rather than look at the undoubted positives that Carroll has shown over some of the past 6 or 7 games (and i for one am very pleased for him.. hes smiling again), we should always keep in mind the bigger picture.

The immediate question is who do we select for Wembley?

Look I haven't been Andy's biggest fan either and I have criticised you on numerous occasions for your bombastic over the top annihilation of Carroll. However the difference is that I'm prepared to give credit where it is due. He has proved in the last few games that we have not seen the best from him and whilst he may be limited he can make a very positive contribution. Yesterday's first goal against Brighton was as much down to Carroll as anybody else. The Brighton defenders concentrated on taking Andy out which left room for Martin to score. He made a positive contribution throughout the game and was most peoples MOTM including mine.

In the last few game it hash't all been long ball and Stoke style football. Look at his goal if you need further evidence of that!

Sums up my point.

Hes limited, so while he will make positive contributions here and there (as Heskey did) he lacks whats needed for a forward chasing leagues/cl. If we had had a decent forward over the past 12 months we wouldn't be sitting in 7th.

Andy Carroll at his very very best (the best hes shown in his career thus far) is nowhere near good enough for where we aspire to be.

I may seem very churlish, afterall hes just scored, made an assist... and has had positive contributions over the past month (the assist for Bellamy at Bolton was very good)... and perhaps i should JUST focus on this, but i tend to look at the bigger picture, always have done.

People seems to think because Carroll was purchased for £35m he must be the finished article. I beg to differ. We purchased a young player with great potential. Sure he learned his trade with a system setup to play direct to him, but we have seen that recently with a little confidence he has been adapting his style and succeeding.

We haven't become a long ball team and Carroll hasn't become Suarez but what has happened is both Club and player have adapted to make it work. Continued faith and time on the pitch we'll start to see how good Carroll can be. FWIW I can't see him being sold in the summer either.

For me Suarez and Carroll will be the starting line up at Wembley. Downing will go for Bellamy.
