This is really bad news. Hopefully spearing can step up.

Its a shame because Lucas was playing well and Spearing aside we dont really have another defensive midfielder, but i dont think he will be greatly missed if Spearing can repeat his peformances from last year, put it this way if we can cope ok without Gerrard we can certainly get by without Lucas Leiva.

Just when it started to look like we had a solid midfield, this kind of :censored: happens... well I guess mine and many Liverpool fans wish came true... only a few seasons late.

Lucas has contributed more to the team over the last season and a half than Gerrard has - We have coped with the loss of Gerrard because of the way Lucas has played .

Do you still believe players like Mikel are better than him ?

The annoying thing about this for me apart from losing Lucas is that come January Kenny & Comolli will probably be off spending whatever cash FSG hand over on yet another central midfielder and we'll again not strengthen up front or out wide.

So your saying that Lucas has replaced Gerrards role in the team? your posts are as laughable as usual then i see. Lucas is playing well theres no doubting that but lets not delude ourselves that he was carrying the team or playing a vital role. He' still a major reason why we score so few goals and struggle against lesser teams. And yes i dont beleive that Lucas is any better than Mikel, Ramires or Anderson in terms of ability though clearly he is/was in better form. Personally i dont think Lucas will even be missed as long as Spearing does a decent job as defensive midfielder for team as thats not wear our probles lie, its putting the ball in the net thats the problem.

Don't be so quick to dismiss his importance, although I somewhat agree he won't be that missed in the upcoming games as long as we play as good as we're capable of playing but without him against City/Chelsea these past few matches we would have more than likely had our midfield dismantled and we wouldn't have come out with 2 wins and a draw, he was THAT good.  It's the matches against the top teams where we more than likely will be overrun in the middle.  On another note Lucas is quite clearly the best at what he does in the league.  He's been crucial for us at a very important time, the last 3 games have made our season a season of hope and excitement when it could have easily turned it into another roller coaster ride.

In the big games we will feel his loss a lot more, but the majority of the games are against lesser teams where we will have most of the possesion anyway. Our seasons is looking up but its still on a knife edge, weve done our usual of looking strong versus the big teams but we desperately need to pick up points versus the smaller sides if were to have a chance at getting in the top 4 which is looking increasingly difficult considering our lack of goals.

Shame we didn't make a move for Scott Parker in the summer.

I reckon spearing is going to step up and convince the board he will do a job from now until the end of the window, and then cement his place until the end of the season.

Lucas is going to be missed in our midfield, no question but we have the squad to cope. Maybe a loaner in Jan? who may be available?

We have had the most shots at goal in the league, bar city, so it's Lucas' fault that Suarez is not clinical and Downings shots all end up in row Z?! He p!sses all over Anderson and Mikel, Ramires is talented, but does not yet have the discipline or awareness of Lucas.

He is very very good at what he does, Rafa, roy and Kenny have been unanimous in their confidence in him. We will miss him, his position in the the team is pivotal, he covers the back four and starts our forward play.

Redman in wales wrote:Liverpool FC said today a scan had confirmed an injury to the Anterior Cruciate Ligament in Lucas Leiva's left knee.

"The Brazil international will undergo surgery and unfortunately be ruled out for the remainder of the current campaign."

Could see that as soon as he went to ground.
Innocuous challenge with devastating consequences
