Substitutions - Why have we stopped using them?

Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Am I the only one who’s noticed that we rarely use substitutes these days?

There has been a number of games this season (and last) when Kenny just hasn’t made the changes necessary and i think it’s costing us points.

Last season the excuse was our lack of squad depth...hence our bench was ALWAYS weak and no one blamed Kenny for not making changes. However, this season we’ve got lots of good options, yet Kenny does nothing. Take Man City on Sunday....Carroll comes on with 5 mins to go. It was a similar story against Norwich and Man utd. What’s going on ?

It's hard to tell if he made the correct choice or not.  If he had brought Carroll on earlier, he'd be taking off a midfielder and we may have lost the control that we had against city.  Carroll came on when they lost Balotelli.  As soon as Balotelli went off, Carroll came on.

I'm not saying I disagree at all, because I think everybody has thought he should have made changes earlier.  However, you don't want to change what's working.  Look at how every game we've drawn has ended.  Us attacking attacking attacking the goal and pounding shot after shot off at the keeper, who have made many good saves.  We were doing the right things.. really everything except putting the ball in the back of the net.

It's just hard for Kenny to decide who and when to sub when we are controlling the game.

Well, that's what most people criticize Kenny for, he never has a plan B.

That's what I'm saying Kewell.  We outplayed manure, and it's dangerous to make a sub when you're outplaying them.  Same with Sunderland, Norwich and Swansea.  We were attacking the goal at the end of those games, and doing everything except putting it in the back of the net.  Switch one player out and you could mess up the entire flow.
