Rodolfo Borrell admits problems with new Liverpool job

11/02/2011 - 03:08

Liverpool reserves coach Rodolfo Borrell admits he's found his promotion difficult.

He admits the position has been somewhat challenging, but is completely committed to the overall objective of developing players for first-team duty.

The former Barcelona coach told liverpoolfc.tv: "It's been tough. I knew it would be a massive challenge with such a young squad. This is the way the club have wanted to approach the reserve set-up and I am completely behind the decision.

"It must be the next step straight after the U18s. The only problem is that most of the clubs don't think the same and we will maybe struggle against bigger and older sides.

"We are here to produce players for the first-team and we consider this to be the right way to go about it."

Owners/Comolli have a different view than Borrell? Rafa brought Borrell as part of reshaping the academy and get younger players ready for first team, things changed when the  new owners and a director of football came in. I'm not surprised to see Borrell not happy with the change and extra pressure given to him, and with that kind of statement I don't think he is staying for too long

Hi MH,

Putting 2 and 2 together to get 36, I'd say the owners want to accelerate the Academy/Reserve set up with a 5 year plan to have today's 18 year olds as seasoned (note that, 'seasoned' ie willing to take a couple of years for them to catch up) first team players at 23 whilst the build and pay for the new stadium.

Its commercial and common sense and I'm pretty sure the coach is 'completely behind the decision' because someone's had a whisper in his shell-like.

American teen Pelosi signs with Liverpool

Fabled English Premier League club Liverpool, acquired one year ago by Boston Red Sox owners Fenway Sports Group, is now adding American players. On Tuesday, U.S. Under-17 national team captain Marc Pelosi became the second U.S. youth international to sign for the five-time European champion, joining fellow Californian Villyan Bijev.

Pelosi, a midfielder, will play for one of Liverpool’s academy sides.
"We're determined to identify the best possible talent globally, and I'm delighted we've been able to bring Marc in to the club,” Liverpool academy director Frank McParland said on the club’s website.

Pelosi, from the San Francisco Bay area, has played 28 times for the Under-17 national team and helped them advance to the second round of this summer’s FIFA U-17 World Cup. During the competition, he told MLSSoccer.com that while “college could still be a good option ... going pro is my first priority.” Pelosi said there already had been “strong interest from Liverpool” and several clubs in Germany, where he was born.

Fresno product Bijev, a member of the U.S. Under-18 team, joined Liverpool in July.

saw him play for the under 16s and he was easily the best player on the park. Big lad too for his age.

Liverpool ready to make fresh bid for Crewe's young striker ClaytonBy Sportsmail Reporter
25th November 2011

Liverpool are weighing up another bid for Crewe striker Max Clayton in January as competition increases for the 17-year-old. England youth forward Clayton drew a crowd of scouts from the top of the Barclays Premier League during the FA Youth Cup tie at Huddersfield on Wednesday.

Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City were among those present while Tottenham have already declared an interest, as revealed by Sportsmail. Director of football Dario Gradi has been fiercely protective of Clayton and believes his interests are best served gaining experience at Crewe.

Clayton, however, scored in Crewe's 2-1 win over Morecambe last Saturday and that is increasing interest.
Liverpool and Tottenham are also vying for Wycombe's 15-year-old striker Jordan Ibe.

Not better than Dunn's tight angle goal, no way, that was quality.

Shelvey is really in form and we need to use that. He has scored 2 goals in the reserve match against Wigan in a 5-1 win. The other scorers were Adorjan, Eccleston and Suso.

Any chance of getting a stream for this?

Liverpool's youngsters take on Tottenham Hotspur in the NextGen Series quarter-final on Wednesday night - and you can watch the whole game live exclusively on LFC TV and LFC TV Online.

Join Claire Rourke live at White Hart Lane from 6pm GMT alongside Kop legends David Fairclough and Gary Gillespie. Kick-off is at 7pm.

Looking forward to the tie, skipper Conor Coady said: "It should be a good game, we play against English teams week in, week out so hopefully that will stand us in good stead.

"The competition has been a great learning curve for us. We've played against some top teams. All the teams have been different. Sporting Lisbon are fantastic and are a great footballing side. Wolfsburg and Molde were a bit more physical so it's been good to come up against different styles.

"I hope we still have a lot more to give. In the group stage we perhaps haven't showed what this Liverpool side can do, so hopefully we'll come out against Spurs and show everyone what we can do."

Coady also explained the captaincy this season, with himself and Andre Wisdom sharing the armband for Rodolfo Borrell's side in 2011-12.

He added: "We had a meeting with Rodolfo at the start of the season. Andre was skipper of the reserves last season so Rodolfo wanted to keep some form of continuity. I'd been captain for his U18s so he asked me if I wanted to skipper the team in the NextGen, so I was delighted to accept it."
