There was a similar thread/discussion in regard to Alonso's value to the team a while back, some of our armchair experts couldnt see the work off the ball, the positional play, covering threats and general game intelligence, and were unconcerned with him potentially being sold. Since he left we have agreement to a man that we need a player like him. It's the same with Lucas, I'm not fcking saying he's Alonso btw, other managers, players and commentators outside of the club see his value, our players and management do to, but not all our expert fans.

i think you's are being harsh on fletcher,that lad has won his fair share of games with vital goals for them.
based on that he gets the nod over lucas for me.

lucas is just above average but its a position we could improve on.

I remember those days clearly, when many were unconcerned about losing Alonso as Mascherano was much better, which i personally thought was ridiculous.

The diffrence is though that Alonso is one of the worlds best players in his position, Lucas is a very average defensive midfielder who could quite easily be improved on, though i agree there are other parts of the team that require more urgent attention.

Thing is everyone says we could quite easily improve on Lucas, and yeah of course if a better player came along, great, that's football, but it really isn't that easy to improve on players, unless you can or do a citeh, or if the player is useless. We lost Torres and bought Carroll improvement? No. meireles vs adam, no again. I don't believe we can afford to spend £100m ish each season, and therefore our main areas of concern need addressing properly before replacing a player who has become accomplished in the role he plays. He aint the best ever or the best in the world, but apart from the DMs at citeh I consider him to be at least an equal of the rest in the premiership.

Christ you guys read far too much :censored:

in the papers . Wilshire is a typical English player who because he is a little bit better than some gets massively overhyped before he has even fulfil any sort of promise . The press have built him up beyond belief as if he is the new white hope and so far he has achieved zero in the game . Perspective people - just because someone is English and young and playing for Arsenal doesn't mean he is a superstar .

Ps- two arsenal fans I work with both agree that Ramsey is better .

His quick reaction time to then reach the loose ball from the resulting free kick, under which he was then tackled in the penalty area, earned his side a penalty, which Dirk Kuyt converted.

Following the game, Kenny Dalglish praised "...he may be the one who stops the guy (opponent) going past the first fella then sets us on our way (creates attacks)," drawing growing comparisons to Xavi and 1994 World Cup winner and captain, Dunga.

On 24 May, Lucas was voted the Standard Chartered Fans player of the year for the 2010-11 season, winning 40% of the 129,774 votes cast.

He also made the most tackles in the top 4 European leagues in the 2010-2011 season.[B]

Three or four outstanding games out of 177 appearances may be your definition of great but its not mine.
For the other 170 plus games he has been less than impressive. He is average at best with infrequent flashes of good, solid play. He is bound to have a couple of memorable performances out of all the opportunities hes had. Lampards proof of that analogy. But I cant say, hand on heart, that he would be in my top ten or even twenty of great LFC midfield players. I wouldnt be criticising him so much if people didnt big him up so often.
Hes just not that good.

I think if we put some faith in Lucas as the one to be the playmaker and have someone who could be versatile as he is alongside him we would see the best of both worlds with Lucas. When he played alongside Spearing they looked so good because Spearing knew to defer to Lucas to set the tempo and create with his passing, in my opinion Lucas has it in him to be very very good at being an all around midfielder but we restrict his role too much by playing him with Adam. Adam isn't the kind of player to control a game at all, ever. He just simply isn't that type of player he doesn't have it in him to slow things down, play the simple pass repeatedly etc etc for me Adam isn't smart enough and we're just hindering Lucas' development by forcing the partnership on both players.

I still think people don't give him enough credit at times, he's a really good midfielder but we're not using him to his full potential when we play him next to Adam. When Lucas is entrusted with being the metronome of the midfield he can be very, very good. At his best as the playmaker he's better than any midfielder we have bar Stevie, Stevie at his best in the middle playing controlled is world class that goes without saying really.

Surprised that no one has mentioned Lucas and his performance yesterday. He absolutely bossed the midfield yesterday. He was excellent and has grown into a top class central midfielder.

It's not worth mentioning any more as his great performance has become a standard.
