Liverpool Football Club - General Discussion

Thought KD's press conference was a lost opportunity. Times have changed; all this dignity stuff will never get us anywhere in today's PL. Just got off watching United vs Chelsea and the refereeing standards are light years apart, all in the same league and on same day! Which is not to take away what was a horrendous performance, and poor over optimistic tactics going in...
Floyd stepped left and threw the hook that caught Hatton flush under the chin. Finally, the British champ had arrived in that mythical place of which his fans speak: Hatton Wonderland.

It's a good point and those who previously (including myself) spouted that argument are not being helped. Although if you look at the big players for the clubs around us they are pretty much the finished article, or at least quite far along in their 'progress timeline'. Mata, Young, Aguero, Silva ect.... Henderson and Carroll are both young so I don't think you can quite compare them in the same way.

But that is a hopless mindset if you want to be a top club, as Arsenal is a good example of...

You can not buy players for the future, let them be passagers as they devlop along the way and still expect top finishes.

If you have £50 million and want to fight at the top you buy top class, not players for the future that needs time.

None of our buys have come off so far and so we dont look any further forward at this point. We still have some very ordinary footballers but the investment made was meant to push us on a notch but these lads have to perform. You look at Carroll, Henderson, Downing and Adam and you have to say they havent done hardly anything. We can see Spurs are a decent outfit but City did them 5 at the Lane and Stoke got 4 rammed up them this afty. I dont want to moan but we all love the club and desperately want it to work but its not working so far thats a fact.

He was in Ledley Kings back pocket today in the aerial battle, hes not pacy, hes not technically gifted so doesnt move the ball around well either. I know it was a panic buy after the Torres situation and he was bought with the money we made from that deal but am I alone here in not being able to see how the big man really adds to our side? How can the team adapt to benefit him or vice versa?

Henderson was bought in the long term, I'm sure he will be a good player in a year or 2, but he isn't good enough to start right now. As for Carroll I thought he did ok keeping the ball and he had two good crosses at him that he couldn't get the best out of them. Plus he shifted to the right hand side when Skrtel got sent off! lol.

We still lack quality

we do still lack quality and another thing we are lacking is composure.
none of our midfield has it except for downing at times, the rest panic and are more than happy to pass back and sideways without ever being creative.this puts pressure on the front men and the defense.
we have a very average squad and players still and that was evident today against a spurs side who had nothing to spend in the last window but still managed to aquire two important players in adebayor and parker who absolutely dominated in their positions and stole the show.
the argument that we cant attract quality players without cl football doesnt wash with me when we already let the two most creative players we had leave in aqua and merieles.
but that doesnt matter as everyone seems to think that we will be sorted when gerrard returns.

not saying that mate but i do feel that you are taking the game a bit too far by saying that "worst performances from a Liverpool side I can remember"

i dont have to think back too far to think of more than a few that would make todays game look like a good day.(Blackpool.Everton)

Lakes we had ONE shot at goal in 90mins and that was a direct freekick. We were truly battered from pillar to post from first whistle til last. I didnt think Spurs were a particularly good side going into this but they were head and shoulders above us in every department today. Biggest league defeat in 10+ years according to Sky.

Have to admit it did resemble a game out of the Hodgsen era. Don't know what happened tbh. Ok we lost against Stoke but we played well. No midweek Euro games either. Wrong tactics maybe?

Todays match reminded me of us against City at Anfield last season. Spurs raced out of the blocks and we weren't ready. We were exposed for what we were (weak) down the right. Our performance at WHL under Hodgson was miles better than this, but I consider this to be a bad day at the office. We still have a long way to go to get back to the top four. Personally, I think we'll finish 5th or 6th this season, I've thought that since the summer.

I'm really surprised more people weren't talking about Spurs chances of a top four finish as they have a quality side with a fantastic manager.

We must win the next two games against Brighton and Wolves to get some momentum back for the derby.

Looking at the other thread im actually surprised at how many people thought we would actually win the league this season. I suppose based on the end to last season coupled with some smart buys it would be easy to get carried away. But the last 2 games would bring anyone back down to earth. I agree there isn't enough quality but in the cases of Henderson and Carroll I really think they need at least a full season to bed in.

I wonder if our policy of sticking to British is partly to do with our potential dilemma?

Definitely !  :nod

Partly.....

We're buying the wrong players regardless where they come from. 20M and 35M would have been much better spent on a quality continental playmaker and a decent established striker.

Exactly, they're still only kids, 21 and 22 years of age. I have no doubt they'll benefit from the experience they get now. But maybe the fact we're throwing them in straight away is ultimately costing the team.

I'm not the most patient but I can see we're trying to build here. Hopefully we won't pay for it like Arsenal are.
