I think Bill Shankly would turn in his grave at the attitude of some supporters. Take into consideration his beginnings at Liverpool, and his career before he took over. He built the foundations that, as well as the success he brought to the club, his beliefs continued long after he had left the club. He built the club into a peoples club. He and his players needed the support as much as the supporters needed a respite from the pressures of everyday life.
Take this quote for example:
"That Grimsby team was pound for pound, and class for class, the best football team I have seen in England since the war. In the league they were in they played football nobody else could play. Everything was measured, planned and perfected and you could not wish to see more entertaining football."
Bill Shankly carried an attitude that, if your a realist, you will be ok, if not, then you simply dont fit into his style. Just look at the players he signed. When he signed them, they were nothing special from a supporters kind of view, but by god he gave them the confidence to become our best players. Also he saw in them a hell of a lot more than the talent. He saw a positive attitude. He saw a working mans attitude, he saw an attitude that would fit in perfectly with the supporters. Generally, he saw a bunch of Dirk Kuyts, but with different abilities.
I love the man to bits. Not only for what he did for Liverpool, but also what he did for Grimsby. I love the man because he never let fame go to his head or his players, he remained to the very end, one of the few men who reached the lofty heights of success but kept his feet firmly on the ground.
And the best thing about Shankly's attitude is, it is once again being rekindled with Kenny at the helm of this great club. The down to earth attitude Shankly had, Dalglish has.
We are blessed to have so rich a history as we do.
Bill Shankly: “I was the best manager in Britain because I was never devious or cheated anyone. I’d break my wife’s legs if I played against her, but I’d never cheat her.”
