Andy Carroll signs for West Ham

The Premiership - General Discussion

Postby zarababe » Tue Aug 23, 2011 3:11 pm

As I've said already give the guy a chance, he is young, and has a great chance to do well under Kenny and the signings made. Playing with Suarez.. a world class player already, then he has every chance of improving. As should Henderson, whose another getting it in the kneck.. really dissappointing .. splash the cash.. manager we all want and.... :(

How could we desperate though if we brought a player who we KNEW would be injured for that long!

(fab would have been an ok buy lol)

Kenny wants Carroll, he knows how we are gonna play, and in Kenny we trust

Hell be fine, almost scored on that header and was clear on goal once but Adam gave him a bad pass.  Not to mention the goal that was but wasn't against Sunderland.  That said think he's low on confidence and the team isn't doing him any favours.

I hope Kenny plays Carroll tonight. I doubt Exeter could deal with him. If things go well we could see Carroll bag a lot of goals which will get his confidence up and hopefully he can carry that on against Bolton. Playing as the "battering ram" as some have called him (Personally I think that's b*llocks) Carroll needs to be confident and play with a lot of aggression. Some refs love their whistles and Andy will feel the effect of that, but he has to get on with it anyway. We also need to help him out by having players close to him.

It's still worrying for me to see only Carroll in the box challenging for a header and no one else near him. When playing as a target man you need to see your team mates in your peripheral vision in order to use that aggression with focus rather than just getting up and heading a ball to nowhere. If we saw other players close to him, I guarantee we'd see him winning far more balls and much more decisivley.

That said....Andy has played two games this season and he's had the ball in the back of the net once (disallowed), won a few key headers, set up a couple of goalscoring chances for teammates (The best being for Kelly against Arsenal) and had that great header on goal against Arsenal. I'm scratching my head trying to work out why people think he's :censored:. And he's not even fit or fully settled in the squad yet.

as i said before, everybody knows carroll is not worth anywhere near £35m but that's not his fault. the problem is, because he has that price tag round his neck, some "fans" now expect him to play like a £35m player and when he doesn't they have the audacity to have a go at him. he's played two competitive games with a bunch of new players who he needs to build up an understanding with. he had a wrongly disallowed goal in the opening game against sunderland and would have scored against arsenal but for a great save from their keeper. the kid is a work in progress ffs. he was brought for the long term (5-10 years) and to be judged after 2 games just shows how out of touch some of our support is these days.

Well they do say money is the root of all evil.  Now that we finally have some the expectations are getting a wee bit outta control.  A lot of people seem to be ignoring the giant strides forward we've taken over the last 12 months.

The forum is strangely negative lately considering the club has just spent 100M or so and we've offloaded a chunk of deadwood and beaten Arsenal at the Emirates for the first time in 11 years.

Its gonna take a bit of time before all our new signings get settled and gel together and start challenging for the PL.  Lets hope the owners and fans are patient enough.

PS:  I know its a forum and the point of a forum is for discussion/banter etc... but just a little bit of perspective would be appreciated.   :D

too right mate. We've came out of the tunnel from the Hicks and Gillett (and Roy) debacle to have decent owners for a change who have actually invested in the squad. Business is going on behind closed doors, Kenny's back as a manager and we can send out a Carling Cup squad that can win a game without having to send in too many first teamers

The owners saved money in that window by budgeting a rumoured 30 mill for acquisitions and spending only a couple.

If it doesn't bother them why should it bother the fans??

The net cost of Carroll is about a million - an absolute steal if you ask me!

Would it be more bearable if we paid only 10mil for Carroll? I would rather look at the football being played, not the money involved. At the moment, yes, it looks as if Andy is struggling a bit. But then he's been struggling with fitness ever since he joined. As Kenny said, let's reserve judgement until the lad is fully fit, and I would like to add, until the rest of the new signings have also settled in and the whole team starts to gel.

One more thing also is the balance that Kenny has brought into the team. Previously if Torres and Gerro struggled, then we're basically p.issed. Now even though Andy is struggling, we have others like Suarez, Meireles who can step in and bring in the goals. So as a team, I like the way we're set up now..... though G&T at its best still remain supreme :)

Totally agree with both of you. This place is full of the glass half-empty brigade. Mind you, if we didn't have these eternal pessimists around there'd be nothing to argue about

It was more than a couple. As far as I can remember, it was around £60M for Carroll and Saurez, minus £50M for Torres, leaving around £10M money spent. Unless I've forgotten something.
